IU women's basketball starter Sydney Parrish out indefinitely: 'It's an adjustment.'

BLOOMINGTON — IU women's basketball guard Sydney Parrish is out indefinitely with a foot injury, coach Teri Moren said Friday.

Parrish first suffered the injury on Jan. 19 in a practice and was on crutches with a boot on her right foot at Mackey Arena for IU's game against Purdue on Jan. 21.

"Her status is going to be updated game-to-game," Moren said. "She's in great hands. We're trying to get her back as quickly, but as safely, as we can."

Prior to her injury, Parrish was averaging 10.7 points per game, shooting 44.3% from the floor. She was also averaging 5.8 rebounds per game — second behind senior center Mackenzie Holmes' 7.8.

"Syd was playing great," Moren said. "She was our (third)-leading scorer, she always provided us with such a great dose of energy and hustle, so we do miss that."

Sophomore guard Lexus Bargesser, who normally backs up Chloe Moore-McNeil, will likely start in place of Parrish. Bargesser averages 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game and started for the first time against Purdue after 46 games off the bench for the Hoosiers.

Freshman Julianna LaMendola, who is Parrish's direct backup at the 4, will also see increased minutes on the floor.

"It's an adjustment, but it's an adjustment we've had to go through before when we didn't have Grace (Berger)," Moren said, referring to her graduated guard who missed seven games last year. "We always look at it in a positive way because some of these other kids are going to get great experience and time, and hopefully that'll serve us well down the road."

No. 13 IU (16-2, 7-1 Big Ten) plays host to Northwestern at 2 p.m., Sunday.

Sharnecce Currie-Jelks remains sidelined

Moren also said Sharnecce Currie-Jelks, who has been out since Dec. 22, has been "dealing with some personal issues." Currie-Jelks, a transfer from UT-Martin, had been acting as a third-string center behind Holmes and Lilly Meister.

Currie-Jelks has played in just three times this season for a total of nine minutes. While Currie-Jelks still has a redshirt season available, Moren said they have not discussed that as of right now.
