Isaiah Wynn brushes off Patriots experimenting with him at right tackle
New England Patriots tackle Isaiah Wynn didn’t have a lot to say about the team experimenting with moving him from left to right tackle. Wynn has been at right tackle for the entirety of minicamp, a staggering surprise considering he has not taken snaps there since his rookie season — and didn’t play the position in college.
Instead tackle Trent Brown, who signed a one-year, $9 million deal with the team this offseason, has taken over on the left side. And even when he’s deal with limitations during these minicamp practices, Wynn has stayed on the right side, apparently learning what might be his new position.
During a meeting with the media, Wynn was asked what he can tell reporters about suddenly playing on the right side of the offensive line?
“It’s like playing left tackle, you know? But it’s on the opposite side. … It’s the same position just on different sides,” Wynn said Wednesday after Day 2 of minicamp.
Does Wynn like the change?
“It’s wherever they need me, player.”
Was he surprised?
“It’s wherever they need me.”
Does he think his absence at OTAs led to him playing on the right as opposed to the left?
“I can’t answer that for you,” Wynn said. “You’re probably going to have to ask coach or something.”
But what about Wynn’s perspective — does he think that’s the case?
“I can’t answer that for you,” Wynn said. “You’re going to have to ask coach.”
But … still, what does Wynn think?
“I’m telling you,” Wynn said. “You’re going to have to ask coach.”
That’s that.
All signs are pointing to this move becoming official in training camp. The Patriots may experiment with players at new positions, but that doesn’t usually happen until training camp when they’ve learned their true position. That’s what appears to be happening here: Wynn is learning his new and true position for 2022: Right tackle.
