Iowa State wrestling releases probable starters for dual against Cleveland State

Iowa State wrestling released its probable starting lineups for its season-opening dual on Nov. 5 against Cleveland State with very few surprises.

In addition to being the first dual of the season for Iowa State, it also serves as a homecoming for NCAA champion David Carr. The dual is taking place in Massillon, Ohio in his old high school gym at Perry High School. There, Carr was a four-time Ohio state champion.

Here's the full projected starter list for Carr's homecoming:

125: Kysen Terukina 133: Evan Frost 141: Jacob Frost 149: Anthony Echemendia157: Jason Kraisser 165: David Carr 174: MJ Gaitan 184: Caleb Helgeson197: Julien Broderson 285: Yonger Bastida

The small surprise of this starting lineup comes at 149 and 184 pounds, where Casey Swiderski and Tate Naaktgeboren are notably absent.

Swiderski was an NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds last year but added weight to assumedly fill the Paniro Johnson hole. Echemendia, however, won a wrestle-off against Swiderski earlier this month, seemingly giving that edge while Swiderski adjusts.

Helgeson lost his wrestle-off with Naaktgeboren, but only by a 7-5 result. Both former state champions in Iowa, the two freshmen have a ton of talent, but it appears Helgeson's redshirt year gives him the advantage for now.

Another notable part of this lineup is the inclusion of the Frost twins, two highly talented young wrestlers that everyone in the program seems to be taking notice of.

"They’re both really good,” Carr said. “I can hardly tell them apart.”

Will Feldkamp, a two-time NCAA qualifier who transferred from Clarion this offseason, was left off the starting lineup. Coach Kevin Dresser said he is dealing with an injury and should be back within the next week or two, along with Cody Chittum.
