Introducing the Des Moines Register's 2023-24 preseason All-Iowa boys high school basketball teams

The Iowa high school boys basketball season begins on Monday, Nov. 27, and the Des Moines Register is back with another preseason list.

This time it’s the All-Iowa teams, made up of five first-team selections, five-second team selections and 10 honorable mentions. The athletes chosen for this list are picked based on past success but also their projected success in the upcoming season.

There are some expected names on this list – like Valley’s Curtis Stinson or a host of football recruits who double as basketball stars – as well as some surprises.

Joe Bean averaged close to 15 points per game a season ago. He will be playing his senior season at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

But new players can emerge throughout the season that may warrant a spot on the postseason All-Iowa team. That’s the beauty of preseason lists: Anything can happen over the next few months.

Names are listed in alphabetical order.

Preseason All-Iowa First Team

Joe Bean, sr., Cedar Rapids Kennedy

Bean — averaging 14.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season — was a crucial part of Xavier’s runner-up finish in 2023. Now at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, he’s poised for an even bigger year playing with some of the most talented players in the state.

Redek Born, sr., Norwalk

Norwalk guard Redek Born will be heading to Northern Iowa after his high school career.

Born wasn’t satisfied with how he performed during his sophomore year, so he stepped up his game last year. Expect the speedy Norwalk guard to improve even more on his averages of 18.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists from the 2022-23 season.

Owen Larson, sr., Estherville-Lincoln Central

How could we not include an all-around game-changer like Larson? He’s an efficient and reliable scorer and loves to pull down boards, averaging an insane 27.2 points per game and adding 8.4 rebounds to his nightly stat sheet.

Curtis Stinson Jr., jr., West Des Moines Valley

Valley guard Curtis Stinson jr. helped lead the Tigers to a state title last season.

Stinson showed glimpses of how successful he could be as an individual last season, averaging 13.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. But his ability to make his teammates better sets him apart and helped the Tigers to a state championship a season ago.

Caden Wilkins, sr., Bettendorf

Wilkins is the type of player whose teammates can count on and who opponents hate to compete against. He scores from all over the floor, averaging 19.9 points per game, and contributes everywhere else, with 10.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 blocks per game a season ago.
