Class 3A: NorthWood 66, Guerin Catholic 63, OT

It was the Cade Brenner show for a half in the Class 3A state championship game Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

But it was not that easy for the Panthers to secure their first state title.

Top-ranked NorthWood (28-2) had to hold off a furious rally from Guerin Catholic to win in overtime, 66-63. Guerin never led until taking one-point lead early in overtime, but NorthWood was able to take control again on a basket by Ian Raasch and a 3-pointer by Ethan Wolfe.

Brenner finished with a game-high 28 points. Sophomore Tyler Raasch had 14 points and 13 rebounds for NorthWood and Ian Raasch, the Mental Attitude award winner, added 13 points.

The 6-3 Brenner came out on fire, scoring the game’s first eight points and NorthWood cruised to an 18-4 lead. Brenner had 23 by halftime on 8-for-11 shooting, including 5-for-7 from the 3-point line as the Panthers led, 35-27.

It was far from a runaway in the second half, though. Brenner did not score in the second half, finally breaking through for five points in overtime.

Guerin title shot comes up short:'I hope they go and finish it off next year.'

Guerin Catholic (20-9) was led by Kamea Chandler’s 22 points. Jack Cherry had 15 points.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 11 points in the fourth quarter before 3-pointers from Chandler and Cherry sparked a rally. Chandler scored on a drive and then again on and old-fashioned three-point play with 1:39 left, 52-52.

NorthWood played for a final shot in regulation, but Brenner’s driving attempt from the left side was off target.

Class 2A: FW Blackhawk Christian 52, Linton-Stockton 45

Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian put the clamps on Linton-Stockton in the second half, pulling away for a 52-45 win in the Class 2A championship and the program’s third state championship since 2019.

Blackhawk Christian (27-3) trailed by 11 points at halftime as Linton-Stockton star Joey Hart lit up the Braves for 18 points. Coach Matt Roth switched 6-8 sophomore Kellen Pickett on to the 6-6 Hart, holding him to five points after halftime.

“Gage (Sefton) worked his tail off in the first half and Hart made some deep 3s,” Blackhawk Christian coach Matt Roth said. “He really got going so we threw Kellen at him … we threw the length at him.”

Pickett also pitched in a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds as the Braves rallied with a 10-0 third-quarter run and took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter. Sefton added 16 points and eight rebounds and Jimmy Davidson had nine points and seven boards.

Hart finished with 23 points and Logan Webb added 11 points. Linton-Stockton shot just 4-for-27 in the second half, including 1-for-13 from the 3-point line.

Class A: Lutheran 97, Southwood 66

Once Lutheran turned up the pressure, the Class A state championship was a wrap.

The Saints (20-7) won their first boys basketball state title in school history with a record-setting 97-66 win over Southwood Saturday morning at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Lutheran tied the record for a state championship game for points with 1955 Crispus Attucks and set the record for margin of victory and total points in a Class A game.

Lutheran, missing open shots and uncharacteristically turning the ball over, trailed by five points early in the second quarter. A 3-pointer from Durray Smith and an old-fashioned three-point play by KJ Patterson sparked the Saints to go on a 33-9 run to finish the first half.

Lutheran’s 36-point second quarter set an all-time state finals record. By halftime, the Saints led 45-26 and were never seriously threatened again.

Neddenriep:Lutheran was 'different' in Class A final — and set records in state title win.

Smith, a senior guard, led Lutheran with 21 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line. Sophomore LJ Ward was outstanding, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Cayden Loescher had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Kam Patterson had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Jason Oprisek each had 17 points and five rebounds to lead Southwood (15-13). Cole Winer added 15 points and six rebounds.
