Forward progress ruling costs Tennessee Vols football a touchdown in overtime in Music City Bowl loss

At least Tennessee Vols football fans can't complain about SEC officiating on Thursday at the Music City Bowl.

Why? Because an ACC crew was officiating the Vols' game against the Purdue Boilermakers at Nissan Stadium.

And that crew, led by Jerry Magallanes, made a game-impacting mistake in overtime.

Vols running back Jaylen Wright was ruled down by forward progress on a fourth-and-goal play from the Purdue 1 on Tennessee's OT possession. That is acceptable, had Wright's forward progress had ever been stopped. Wright eventually stretched the ball into the end zone on the play, but was already ruled down outside of the goal line by forward progress. It did not appear Wright was down by contact, either.

Because of the forward progress ruling, replay review could not overturn the call.
