Ilion Post beaten in first game at state American Legion tournament

UTICA - The first day of New York's junior division American Legion baseball tournament Friday produced a pair of lop-sided scores, including the first loss of the season for one of four teams at Murnane Field.

Both games were shortened by the American Legion mercy rule.

The Clinton County Mariners from District IV defeated District VI Binghamton Post 10-0 in six innings in the opening game. The Rockland Pirates sponsored by District IX's Leo Landers Post were 17-0 winners in five innings against Ilion Post which entered the tournament with a 21-0 record as the champion from District V.

All four teams will be back on the field for the second day of double-elimination play Saturday. The Mariners and Pirates are scheduled to play for the first spot in Sunday's championship round in the 1 p.m. game. Ilion and Binghamton posts have an elimination game at 4 p.m. The second semifinal is scheduled for 7 p.m.
