Hudson, Highland golf teams pursue sweep of Suburban League rivals

The Hudson and Highland girls and boys golf teams are aiming to finish off season sweeps of their respective Suburban League rivals this week.

Hudson's girls and boys teams won the first three SL National Conference tournaments and Highland's girls and boys teams won the first three SL American Conference tournaments.

The Explorers and Hornets girls teams can go four for four Wednesday with first-place finishes at Brookledge Golf Club in Cuyahoga Falls.

The Explorers and Hornets boys teams can do the same Thursday with first-place finishes at J.E. Good Park Golf Course in Akron.

What to know about the Hudson boys golf team

The Hudson boys team, coached by Matt Villenauve, set a school record with a score of 291 in the third SL National tournament on Sept. 11 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.

Sam Fauver won his third SL National medalist honor of the year with a 70. Ben Fauver finished second with a 71, Callahan Lawler was third with a 73 and Benjamin Matava contributed a 77.

The Hudson boys were also first in the SL National tournaments at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley on Aug. 8 with a 302 and at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Medina on Aug. 23 with a 312.

Sam Fauver placed first at Pine Hills with a 71, Mike Dorony was second with a 74 and Ben Fauver was fourth with a 77. Callahan Lawler added an 80.

Sam Fauver topped the field at Pleasant Valley with a 68, Ben Fauver was second with a 76, Matava shot an 81 and Koen Vanscoy carded an 87.

What to know about the Hudson girls golf team

Hudson's girls team, coached by Bobby Bolin, recorded SL National tournament victories on Aug. 10 at Old Avalon Golf Course in Warren with a school-record score of 296, on Aug. 17 at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Medina with a 325 and on Sept. 10 at Fox Den Golf Course in Stow with a 311.

Hudson's top scorers at Old Avalon were Sherry Du (second, 69), Emmy Burling (third, 72), Elena Varga (fourth, 75) and Ellie Davis (80).

Burling shot a 76 to finished tied for second with Solon's Serena Wu at Pleasant Valley. Hudson's other scorers were Du (79), Julia Van Bokkelen (82) and McKenna Kiewatt (88).

Hudson's top four at Fox Den were Burling (76), Du (77), Davis (78) and Van Bokkelen (80).

What to know about the Highland girls golf team

The Highland girls team, coached by Mary Becker, won the SL American tournaments on Aug. 10 at Old Avalon with a score of 282, on Aug. 17 at Pleasant Valley with a 300 and on Sept. 10 at Fox Den with a 297.

Isabella Goyette tied Aurora's Brooklyn Millard for first at Pleasant Valley with a 68, placed second at Fox Den with a 69 and was third at Old Avalon with a 67.

Highland's leaders at Old Avalon were Goyette (third, 67), Elizabeth Coleman (tied for fourth, 69), Paige McKendry (fifth, 70) and Kavya Chada (76).

The Hornets received a winning 68 from Goyette at Pleasant Valley to go along with 77s from Coleman and Avery Albright and a 78 from McKendry.

Highland's top four at Fox Den were Goyette (second, 69), Coleman (third, 72), McKendry (fifth, 74) and Chada (82).

What to know about the Highland boys golf team

The Highland boys team, coached by Andrew Dutt, won the SL American tournaments at Pine Hills on Aug. 8 with a 318, at Pleasant Valley on Aug. 23 with a 321 and at Windmill Lakes on Sept. 11 with a 314.

Ryan Przybysz, Zach Butcher and Drew Mamer shot 79s to pace Highland at Pine Hills and Luke Butcher shot 81.

Highland's top scorers at Pleasant Valley were Nate Sprutte (78), Przybysz (79), Mamer (81) and Luke Butcher (83).

Highland's leaders at Windmill Lakes were Zach Butcher (75), Luke Butcher (77), Sprutte (79) and Przybysz (83).

Who can potentially top Hudson and Highland in golf?

Aurora and Kent Roosevelt should challenge the Highland girls in the SLAC, and Stow and Nordonia are top competition for the Hudson girls in the SLNC on Wednesday at Brookledge.

Aurora's Brooklyn Millard placed first indivually in two of the SLAC girls tournaments with a 65 at Old Avalon and a 67 at Fox Den. Millard tied Goyette for first at Pleasant Valley with a 68. Kent's Maddie Kost finished in the top four in all three SLAC tournaments.

Nordonia's Julia Gulla finished first in two SLNC girls tournament with a 67 at Old Avalon and a 73 at Fox Den, and tied Du of Hudson for fifth at Pleasant Valley with a 79. Stow's Gabriella Berlingieri won the title at Pleasant Valley with a 75. Stow's Olivia Berlingieri and Nordonia's Brooke Barnes are other standouts to watch.

The boys tournaments Thursday at Good Park are expected to feature Highland, Revere, Kent Roosevelt and Aurora in the SLAC and Hudson, Stow, Brecksville, North Royalton and Twinsburg in the SLNC.

Kent's Liam Curtis earned the SLAC boys medalist honor at Windmill Lakes with a 71, shot a 74 to tie for first with Barberton's Marco Silva at Pleasant Valley and carded a 77 to take third at Pine Hills. Aurora's Max Devins placed first at Pine Hills with a 72 and was second at Windmill Lakes with a 74. Silva was second at Pine Hills with a 75.

Solon's Matthew Contipelli and North Royalton's Charlie Wilson are golfers to watch in the SLNC boys tournament.
