HS TENNIS: Abington Heights beats Wallenpaupack in Lackawanna League showdown

Sep. 1—NEWTON TWP. — Abington Heights' Mary Booth and Amishi Amit didn't realize the importance of their victory at No. 1 doubles when they gathered with teammates.

The duo, which recently started to play as a team, defeated Wallenpaupack's pairing of Soleil Wright and Olivia Kogan, 6-4, 6-0, for the third and clinching win for the Lady Comets in a 5-0 win in a battle between previously undefeated Lackawanna League girls tennis teams Thursday afternoon.

"When we ended the match, we felt really proud of ourselves," Amit said. "We were really happy that we were able to clinch the victory for Abington Heights."

Booth and Amit worked well together in a tightly contested first set. They were able to put away clutch shots and earn a 6-4 win.

"Our confidence was the key," Booth said. "Going into the second set, I thought that I could play better, and I did. We are new to playing as a team. Amishi is a freshman, so we are still getting used to playing together. We had good communication, and that gave us a little bit of an edge."

In the second set, they found a good rhythm by communicating who would take each return shot.

"I think in the first set, we were just overhitting a lot," Amit said. "In the second one, we were talking a lot more and had a good strategy."

Susan Arp faced a daunting challenge from Wallenpaupack's Erika Badner.

In the battle between two All-Region players, Badner took the first set, 6-2, by moving the ball around and capitalizing on a solid first serve.

However, Arp, last year's District 2 Class 3A singles champion, recovered and swept the next two sets, 6-0, 6-1.

"In the first set, she put a lot of pressure on me, and I made a lot of errors," Arp said. "In the second and third sets, I really wanted it more. I hit better volleys, and my groundstrokes were much better."

Abington Heights also got wins from Leelah Farrell and Sona Hanumali at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Farrell defeated Sarah Niemiec, 6-2, and Hanumali beat Alaina Burke, 6-2, 6-1. The Lady Comets No. 2 doubles team of Neveah Vendrell and freshman Sammy Rosenstein beat Cadance Danielski and Kelly Hotaling, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

At Dunmore, Maia Philbin and Tejshree Patel posted singles wins to help Scranton edge Dunmore, 3-2.
