HS Roundup: Cape Coral sweeps LCAC cross country titles; CSN, Barron win swimming districts

THURSDAY

LCAC Cross Country

Big surprises come in blue and orange. Just ask the boys and girls from the Cape Coral High School cross country team.

The Seahawks swept the LCAC Cross Country Championships Thursday morning at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

The girls toed the line first under picture-perfect conditions. Lehigh’s Gianna Del Pizzo and Fort Myers' Masha Dorofeev shot to the front at the gun while a wild team race unfolded behind them.

The Cape Coral girls formed a solid pack early with Riley McFarland tucked away in third and Hannah Green, Mia Moran, and Makiah Michaels following close behind in fifth, sixth, and seventh.

The Green Wave girls started moving up through the field after the second mile but it was too little too late.

Del Pizzo stormed across the finish line in first with Dorofeev 34 seconds behind. Meanwhile, the Seahawks kept their pack together putting four runners in the top 10 to beat Fort Myers by six points.

Gianna Del Pizzo, 17, from Lehigh Senior High School, makes her way through the course at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Thursday morning October, 19, 2023, where the Lee County Athletic Conference (LCAC) Cross Country championships were held. She was the girls individual winner.

“Fort Myers and Estero are elite programs and to be in the conversation with them is an honor,” said an ecstatic Seahawks head coach Robert Berkey.

The boys' race was tight. Fort Myers' Junior Allard and JoJo Koraya sprinted away from the field to wage a battle for the individual title. The win eventually went to Koraya who made a late race surge.

The real drama unfolded behind those two where again the Cape Coral boys employed the same tactics as the girls, putting four in the top 10 led by Jake Jacoby’s third-place finish.

When the last runner crossed the finish line confusion reigned as it initially appeared Fort Myers had pulled off a narrow victory but once all of the points from each team’s top five finishers were tallied it showed a tie between Fort Myers and Cape Coral at 41 points.

The Lee County Athletic Conference (LCAC) Cross Country championships were held at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Thursday morning October, 19, 2023. Cross country runners from Lee county schools competed in the 5-K runs. The girls individual winner was and Gianna Del Pizzo, 17, from Lehigh Senior High School. Joseph Koraya, 17, from Fort Myers High School was the boys individual winner.

That’s when you dip down the sixth runner to break those ties and that’s where the Seahawks' Ben Westerhouse handed his squad the team title by finishing three places in front of the Green Wave’s sixth runner.

“I was really trying out there. It was tough but we did really good overall and I was just trying to keep up with our No. 5 guy Isaac Towenko,” said Westerhouse.

Cape Coral hopes this success could lead to bigger things in the post-season.

“It’s something we’ve been building for a long time, a few years ago we got the girls to states and then the boys to states and I just talk to them about being a part of that legacy,” said Berkey.

TUESDAY

District Volleyball

Class 3A-District 12

First Baptist 3, Bishop Verot 0: The First Baptist Academy volleyball team excelled in almost every area of play Tuesday night and moved to within a win of their first district title in three years. Yet there were things that couldn’t be found on a stat sheet that impressed coach Marci Walker the most.

The Lions showed plenty of tenacity and leadership coming out on to the Lion's Den, and the result was a 3-0, 25-16, 25-20, 25-11 win over Bishop Verot in the District 3A-12 semifinals at First Baptist Academy in Naples.

“We showed a lot of hustle and aggressiveness,” Walker said. “We stepped up and encouraged each other in the first set. I am glad we did it in three. We were missing our starting middle hitter, so the other girls stepped it up in different areas.”

FBA didn’t let an opportunity to play for a district get away, nor did the Lions let the ball elude their grasp. “I liked the fact that we went after every ball. We didn’t let any balls hit the floor,” Walker said. “They (Bishop Verot) are very big up front. We are not that big, so we were smarter with where we hit the ball. We had to, ‘cause they put up a pretty big block consistently.”

The Lions now face Canterbury Thursday night in the 3A-12 title game. First Baptist has gotten the best of the Cougars in two matches this year, grabbing a 3-1 win in the regular season and a 2-0 sweep at the Wildcat Invite.

Zara Stewart had 16 kills and 14 digs for the Lions. Lalia Stewart had 27 assists and Peyton Garrick had nine kills.

“We played our worst game of the season at the worst possible moment,” said Bishop Verot coach Christy Curtis. “We made some critical errors we hadn’t made during the season. Honestly, First Baptist’s biggest attribute is they are as scrappy as can be. They do whatever it takes to get a point.”

It was FBA’s second victory over the Vikings in the last two weeks. The Lions also registered a 3-1 win over Verot back on Oct. 5.

In the first set, the Vikings took an early lead, but then the Lions showed their roar. First Baptist put together a 6-0 spurt to amass a 13-9 lead.

The win in the first was highlighted by several excellent digs in the Lion backline. In the second set, FBA was more relaxed and settled in.

“In the second set, we realized we could do it, so we just sort of ran with it,” Walker said. “We missed more serves than we would like, but we were serving aggressively as well.”

The finale was all First Baptist.

For the Vikings, their season ends, but Curtis didn’t let the disappointment of the hour detract from their effort this season.

“We had one of our best seasons in a long time,” Curtis said. “We had players who moved up in the school record books. We have nothing to be down about. It was a success despite this game being disappointing.”

Canterbury 3, Community School 1: As has been the case for much of the season, it takes a near complete game for any local squad to beat Canterbury.

While the Community School (18-7) volleyball team showed early promise against the Cougars, the Seahawks faltered down the stretch in key moments, as Canterbury (16-8) went on to win, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 Tuesday night at the Murphy Sports Center.

“I was really happy with the way the kids settled in,” Canterbury coach Charlie Castillo said. “They showed a lot of maturity and growth throughout the season. I think this was a huge game for us, because of what happened at the Wildcat Invitational. Our kids were motivated to come out here and show that they’re not the team they were a couple of weeks ago. We just continued to get better. This is going to propel us nicely into the district championship.”

The Seahawks opened the game sharp, capitalizing on Canterbury service errors and forcing the team to play from behind. Canterbury’s 14 points in the first set was one point from matching a season-low in a 25-point set, as First Baptist allowed 13 to the Cougars in the fourth set of a Sept. 28 meeting. Canterbury had 12 service errors in the game, a vast majority of which came in the first two sets.

There were times that the young CSN team was playing beyond its years, but also instances where it was exploited for its youth. Head coach Alicia MacIntyre Ewerth isn’t worried and was pleased with the way her team hung tough on the road.

MacIntyre Ewerth is very much excited for the future for a Seahawks team that returns everyone but senior Kendall Kozel, giving the core group of Kelly McAuley, Sophia Baer, Mia Ringhofer, Lizzy Robinson, Trinity McCormick, and Grace Kulis among others the chance to run it back in 2024.

“I’m proud of them,” MacIntyre Ewerth said. “They came into a great atmosphere, and they definitely had home court advantage. That comes into play as well. They have great talent on that team, and you’ve gotta respect that. We’ve got to play up to our potential. In the first game, we saw a lot of growth. I’m really excited for the future.”

After the first set in which CSN went after Canterbury libero Aaliyah Harlow a handful of times, the Cougars turned the tables and let North Florida commit Madison Hammermeister go to work. Hammermeister had seven attacking attempts in the first seven points of the second set, and posed a problem for the CSN defense for much of the night.

Hammermeister is rounding into form, Castillo said, and likes the direction in which his senior is headed going into the district title game. Hammermeister had 18 kills in the game, a new career high. Brighten Sedmack and Addison Piatt added 10 kills apiece, while Molly Dunn posted 22 assists and Kali Young added 14. Harlow had a team-high 30 digs.

“Madi’s been doing a really good job of continuing to grow throughout the season,” Castillo said. “Brighten and the rest of our attackers have done a good job of watching film and understanding tendencies and sticking to the gameplan. Offensively as a whole, we did a really good job.”

With the win, Canterbury’s playoff hopes remain alive, as the Cougars will head south to Collier County to take on First Baptist. The Cougars sit as the No. 8 seed in Class 3A-Region 3, and while a win would be nice, Canterbury is 19 spots ahead of Bradenton Christian, the region’s No. 9 seed. As long as the Panthers lose to Cardinal Mooney in the Class 3A-District 11 title game on Thursday, the Cougars can likely afford a loss on Thursday and still make the postseason.

CSN needed a win to bolster their standings in the FHSAA’s power rankings, and came into the district tournament seeded 10th in a loaded Class 3A-Region 3. From a probability standpoint, the Seahawks have less than a one percent chance of cracking the top eight and making the postseason.

Canterbury has struggled historically when playing at First Baptist, going 1-5 in their last six appearances in the Lion’s Den. Four of those losses have come against the Lions, while a fifth came against Seacrest Country Day in the Private 8 championship game earlier this year.

“It was huge for us, just from the standpoint of the mental hurdle and giving us confidence going into the district championship on Thursday,” Castillo said. “The goal has been to defend our district championship from last year. We’ve got a rematch with FBA now, which is something we want.

“We don’t feel like we’ve played our best against FBA. They haven’t seen us at our best this year. We’re looking forward to the opportunity of going down to their place and playing them on Thursday.”
