HS Roundup: Jarrell runs strong at Nike Twilight

Oct. 1—TERRE HAUTE — Pendleton Heights junior Ava Jarrell continued her impressive season with a ninth-place run at the Nike Town Twilight Championship race in Terre Haute on Saturday night. Returning to the site of last season's 31st-place state finals run, Jarrell toured the Lavern Gibson Course in 17:43.60, bettering her 2022 time by 1:15 and finishing fourth among Indiana runners in the race.

In the girls Open Combined race, Daleville's Faith Norris was ninth and Kynlie Keffer was 42nd while Hadley Walker was 44th for the Arabians. In the boys Open Combined race, Cameron Smith of Lapel was 16th with a time of 16:25.9.

Here are some more highlights from another busy week in THB Sports area athletics:

MONDAY

Max Barr and Aaron Hartley won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and Eli Birch and Ja'von Miller survived a three-set thriller at No. 2 doubles as Frankton held off Elwood 4-1, just two days prior to meeting again in the sectional first round. Owen Hinchman won a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 11-9 battle at No. 1 singles for the Panthers.

Madison-Grant concluded a 20-1 tennis regular season with a 5-0 sweep of Lewis-Cass. Luke Gilman, Ben Pax and Brogan Brunt swept to the singles wins for the Argylls.

Freshman Leila Wilson scored four goals to lead the Lapel girls soccer team to a 6-2 win over Tri-Central.

Lauren Paska pounded 16 kills and served three aces, Maryn Landis added five aces and 12 digs and Lapel rolled to a 3-0 win over Monroe Central. Karlie Jannings recorded 36 assists and Tatum Harper chipped in 11 digs for the Bulldogs.

TUESDAY

Isaac Haugh's 10th ace on match point clinched a 6-3, 6-4 No. 2 doubles win and a 3-2 overall Pendleton Heights victory over Eastern Hancock. Moved indoors due to weather at the Community Sports and Wellness Center, Haugh's win with Troy Thorsen along with singles wins from Austin Perny and Owen Kean sent the Arabians into the postseason with a 9-8 record.

Trishell Johnson recorded 18 kills and Maddie Rees added 10 to lead Daleville to a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Hancock. Cassidy Rees recorded 32 assists and 13 digs for the Broncos.

Mikala Ross had 10 kills and four blocks and Brea Perry served up six aces to lead Pendleton Heights to a three-set sweep of Shelbyville. Gianna Kanitz had 30 assists and Tessa Hannon and Chloe Carpenter combined for 23 digs for the Arabians.

Kayci Hill ran to a second-place finish to lead Shenandoah to the team runner-up spot at the Henry County cross country championship at Knightstown. Addy Cooper added an eighth-place finish for the girls while Kegan Cooper was the top boys runner for the Raiders in 10th.

WEDNESDAY

A pair of fifth-place finishes highlighted Anderson Prep's effort at the Muncie Burris Cross Country Invitational. Payton Taylor for the boys and Clara Fulton for the girls led the way for the Jets.

Greyson Hovermale scored two goals with two assists, Dylan John added a pair of scores with an assist and Pendleton Heights blanked Shelbyville 7-0. Lucas Mayer-Adams pitched a shutout in goal with five saves.

Frankton swept to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-18 win at Tipton behind 15 kills and three blocks from Holli Klettheimer. Emma Sperry added 10 kills and 24 assists while Claire Duncan chipped in 11 digs.

THURSDAY

Hovermale scored the game winner for the Arabians in a 2-1 win over New Palestine. Jack Weflen also scored for PH, which clinched a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

Wins by William Abbett, Cayson Worrell and Colton Gift helped pave the way for a 5-0 Shenandoah win over Blue River Valley in the New Castle tennis sectional semifinal.

Klettheimer recorded 17 kills and Sperry added 12 as Frankton clinched a share of the Central Indiana Conference volleyball championship with a 3-0 win over Oak Hill.

FRIDAY

Shenandoah dropped a 4-1 decision to New Castle while Pendleton Heights was swept 5-0 by Fishers in their tennis sectional championship matches. The No. 1 Doubles team of Cooper Allen and Christian Dyer won their match for the Raiders and will advance in the IHSAA doubles tournament.

Seniors Christopher Fox and Clayton Hull won their singles matches, but it was not enough as Madison-Grant lost a 3-2 match against Huntington North at Marion in a battle of defending sectional champions. The Argylls' season ended at 20-2.

SATURDAY

Frankton's Hunter Smith was fourth at the Central Indiana Conference championship while top-10 finishes from Gavin Kelich and Dylan Hofherr lifted Madison-Grant to a team runner-up finish.

In the girls race, Joslyn Karnes-Hatfield was fifth for the Eagles and Alexandria's Jacklynn Hosier placed seventh to earn All-CIC honors for both.

Hill of Shenandoah ran to a fourth-place finish at the Winchester Invitational.

Pendleton Heights freshman wrestler Maddie Marsh was 5-0 at the Midwest Nationals in Indianapolis, including wins over nationally ranked Faith James (7-0) and Karen Canchola (fall).

Camryn Bolser recorded 15 kills and two blocks to lead Madison-Grant to a 3-0 win over Alexandria.
