Collier County Cross Country

Naples High made it look easy, taking home the boys and girls titles at the CCAC cross country championships Wednesday morning at Palmetto Ridge High School.

Naples junior Tara Watkins completed the three-peat, sprinting to the front at the gun with teammate Annabelle Daley in close pursuit.

The Golden Eagles' three, four, and five runners formed a tight pack in the top 10 leaving little doubt early on what the result would be.

Watkins made a huge move after the mile to open up a sizeable lead that she held to the finish.

“It feels really good. I was kind of nervous going into it just cause the season’s been a little off going into it,” said Watkins.

The boys' race was a different story with a huge pack led by a couple of seniors, Naples’ Hector Toro and Gulf Coast’s William Montanye.

The pack really didn’t start to thin out until after two miles.  Montanye made a big move late to separate himself from Toro and Palmetto Ridge junior Hayden Clark.

“I kind of noticed that the other guys were starting to fall behind a little bit and I took advantage of the situation and I just decided to grit my teeth and go as fast as I could,” said Montanye.

The Golden Eagle boys replicated the girls’ efforts putting five in the top 10. For Toro his third-place finish fit into his team’s overall goals.

“Our plan is to win CCAC, win districts and win regionals and hopefully runner-up at State,” said Toro.
