Houston Texans 'preparing' for Case Keenum, not C.J. Stroud, vs. Browns | Report

BEREA — The Browns may be seeing an old familiar face on Sunday in Houston instead of one of top young quarterbacks.

Aaron Wilson of Houston television station KPRC reported Tuesday night that "the Texans are preparing" Case Keenum to start at quarterback Sunday against the Browns in a key game with AFC playoff ramifications. Wilson said rookie C.J. Stroud, the former Ohio State standout, remains in the concussion protocol and that he is, according to Wilson's sources, "still dealing with concussion symptoms."

The Texans (8-6) are No. 8 in the AFC playoff race, a spot out of the final wild card berth. The Browns (9-5) are No. 5 in the standings, holding down the first wild card.

“With C.J., he’s still in the concussion protocol, and we’ll see how he progresses throughout the week," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans told Houston reporters on Monday.

Houston, according to Wilson, is also signing former New York Jets quarterback Tim Boyle to the practice squad. Boyle had worked out for the Texans.

The 35-year-old Keenum played for Browns coach Kevin Stefanski in both Minnesota and Cleveland. He appeared in nine games with two starts for the Browns in 2020-21.

“Yeah, we’ll see where that goes," Stefanski said Monday. "Obviously, they’re a talented roster, so we’ll see. Case, specifically somebody that I’ve worked with over the years in two stops, great person, excited to see him down there, and he’s a great quarterback. I mean, he’s won at every level, so we’ll see how the week goes. But, obviously, Case is somebody I have a ton of respect for.”

Keenum led the Texans to an overtime win at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
