Hope men's basketball stuns Trine, Hope women stunned by Trine in MIAA finals

It was a day of surprises in the MIAA tournament basketball finals.

The Hope College men's basketball team upset Trine - at Trine - for the MIAA Tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAA touranment.

Meanwhile, the No. 4 Hope women's basketball team was defeated at home by Trine in the MIAA finals. The women at 24-3 are still more than likely headed to the NCAA tournament as well.

The Hope men defeated Trine 72-68 in overtime.

The Flying Dutchmen (22-6) outscored the Thunder(23-4) 8-4 in the overtime period.

McKenzie scored on a layup and a jumper early in overtime. Clayton Dykhouse added a basket and Tanner Wiegerink made two free throws to seal the win.

Wiegerink scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. McKenzie had 15 points, Gabe Quillan had 13 points and Dykhouse scored 12.

Hope women defeated

The Hope women lost 63-59 to Trine.

The Thunder opened up a 57-50 lead in the fourth quarter and held off the Hope comeback.

The Flying Dutch got within three points in the final seven seconds, but Sidney Wagner hit a late free throw to seal it.

Karsen Karlblom had 13 points to lead Hope, while Terin Maynard had 12. Jada Garner and Sydney Vis each scored nine but went a combined 7-for-20 from the field.

Jada Rhonehouse had 15 points and Wagner scored 14 for the Thunder.

"The story of the game was free throws. They doubled us up there and won by four," Hope coach Brian Morehouse said.
