Honesdale Area Jaycees host fundraising golf tournament at Cricket Hill

BERLIN TWP. — Even though Mother Nature didn’t deign to cooperate, nearly 70 local linksters recently turned out to show their support for a local service organization.

Last Saturday, Cricket Hill provided the backdrop for the 2023 Honesdale Area Jaycees golf tournament. The event serves as one of the year’s biggest fundraisers for a group that hosts numerous community events.

According to Co-Chair Troy Langendoerfer, this year’s tourney was a rousing success, raising about $5,000.

“I’d really like to thank all the players and sponsors,” Langendoerfer said. “Without them, this event wouldn’t be possible.

“I also can't thank all the Jaycees members enough for their help with this event. The Jaycees not only raises funds for the community, but it also teaches its members about leadership and teamwork.

“The Jaycees Open is a primary example of what teamwork can accomplish for our organization and community as a whole.”

Also serving on the 2023 tournament committee were: Eric Avery, Eric Daniels, Craig Ciarrocchi and Clare Kerl.

Action got underway at 9 a.m. on a windy, rain-soaked morning at Cricket Hill.

A total of 17 teams hit the links in search of this year’s Jaycees Open championship. This marked the 22nd year for the event, which was open to men and women in a four-person Captain and Crew format.

Water-logged fairways and slow greens made the course more challenging than usual, but golfers made the best of it and enjoyed the friendly competition.

When all the scorecards were handed in and tallied, the team of Luke Davis, Cody Kellam, Dan Baker and Sam Steelman were declared winners. This foursome posted a sizzling round of 58, which is 13 under par.

Earning runner-up honors was the team of Gillow, Avery, Dyser and Gillow with a 62. Most Honest Card was awarded to the team of Burke and Green at 74.

Individual on-course prize winners were: Denis Radick (total skins); Jordan Meyer (men’s closest to the pin); Roz Burke (women’s closest to the pin); Jon Gillow (men’s longest drive); Taylor Rickard (women’s longest drive).

Looking ahead

The Honesdale Area Jaycees sponsor many local community events each year.

Next up on the 2023 calendar is the annual Halloween Parade. This extremely popular event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 24.

The parade steps off a 7 p.m., travels up Main Street before turning off on 10th Street and ending in Central Park.
