Holland Christian swims to D3 Invite title as big season continues

ZEELAND - After a week extra of waiting because of weather, the Holland Christian boys swimming and diving team claimed the D3 Midseason Invitational on Saturday.

It was the 14th edition of the top in-season meet in Division 3 in Michigan. Saturday saw six of the top 10 teams in Division 3, including No. 2 East Grand Rapids.

The No. 3 Maroons scored 437 points to win the meet. East Grand Rapids was second with 427, followed by DeWitt (305), Spring Lake (270), Otsego (203.5), Hamilton (198) and the rest of the 12-team field.

The Maroons opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Jake Shoemaker, Levi Rozema, Karsten Huisman and Basilio Ledesma won in 1:39.38.

Ledesma won the 100 butterfly in 52.32 and Rozema won the 100 breaststroke (59.18).

Rozema was fifth in the 200 IM (2:05.27) and Huisman was sixth (2:06.73). Ledesma was fourth in the 50 free (21.95) and Schoemaker was sixth (23.11). Huisman finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (55.27).

Parker Schut won diving with 482 points. Teammate Charlie DeHaan took third with 381.95.

Lee Assink took second in the 500 free (4:38.94) and Seth Windemuller was sixth (5:14.90). Nathan Bengelink was fifth in the 100 free (50.71).

Miles Stock, Assink, Shoemaker and Bengelink took second in the 400 free relay (3:23.50).

"We swam fast today. Some really impressive performances all the way through our line up today. As we pass the halfway mark of the season it offers some confidence for our athletes and sets us up for the hard work that has to take place over the next few weeks," Holland CHristian coach Todd Smeenge said. "I am so thankful to Zeeland West HS and the entire staff here at the Zeeland Natatorium who offered to host our event after last week's weather cancellation. The teams that join us for this invitational look forward to this meet and rank it right behind their conference meet and the state meet as an opportunity to put up some really fast times."

Hamilton's Carson McIntire took third in the 200 free (1:51.19). Jackson Miller was fifth in diving (339.95). Jack Langeland was fifth in the 100 butterfly (56.58).
