Highlands Latin sweeps titles in Region 3 track; See who's headed to Class A state meet

Highlands Latin swept the boys and girls titles at Wednesday’s Class A, Region Three Track and Field Championships at Ballard High School.

Highlands Latin’s boys won with 138 points and were followed by Collegiate (122) and Kentucky Country Day (82). Highlands Latin’s girls won with 135 points and were followed by Walden (77), Collegiate (74) and Presentation (74).

Highlands Latin’s boys got individual victories from a quartet of juniors: Josh Vander Woude (400-meter dash), Benjamin Bitner (800), Parker Boyd (shot put) and William Krumhansl (triple jump).

Holy Cross junior Keith Hadley swept the 100 and 200, Collegiate sophomore James Gurley won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Collegiate senior Oliver Veliquette captured both hurdles events (110 and 300).

Highlands Latin’s girls got a big day from junior Molly-Louise Denley, who won the 300 hurdles and the high jump and was a member of the Highlanders’ victorious 800 relay team. Highlands Latin also won the 3,200 relay, and freshman Logan Boyd won the shot put and discus.

Walden sophomore Natalie Svidal pulled a triple, winning the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump.

Brown junior Chabely Perez-Tolon swept the 100 and 200, and Walden freshman Elizabeth Mathews won the 1,600 and 3,200.

The top two finishers in each event earned automatic spots in the Class A State Track and Field Championships set for May 30 at the University of Kentucky. Others may earn spots based on their performances versus others from around the state.
