High school softball: Section 9 tournament scores, roundups and schedule
Twenty-four teams have earned spots in the newly expanded Section 9 softball tournament - Class AAA is the new addition. The top seeds are Middletown in Class AAA, Valley Central in Class AA, Saugerties in Class A, Chester/Seward in Class B, Tri-Valley in Class C and Eldred in Class D.
The tournament begins on Monday, May 20, and concludes with finals at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25.
In the 2023 finals, No. 1 Monroe-Woodbury beat No. 2 Warwick in Class AA; No. 1 Roosevelt beat No. 2 Minisink Valley in Class A; No. 1 Marlboro beat No. 3 Ellenville in Class B; No. 2 S.S. Seward beat No. 1 Pine Plains in Class C; and, No. 1 Eldred was declared champ in Class D.
In the state playoffs, Monroe-Woodbury won once before falling to North Rockland in the AA quarterfinals; Roosevelt fell to Maine-Endwell in the A opener; Marlboro won three games in B before falling to Ichabod Crane in the state finals; S.S. Seward also won three times before falling to Gowanda in the C state finals; and, Eldred dropped its opener to Deposit-Hancock.

Section 9 teams would have to win three or four games to claim a state title. The Final Four will be held at the Martha Avenue Recreation Park in Bellport on June 7-8.
