High school soccer: King sparks South Jefferson to quarterfinal win in boys soccer

Oct. 21—ADAMS — James King scored a pair of goals to spark South Jefferson's boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Friday night in a Section 3 Class A quarterfinal.

Goalkeeper Jack Porter made four saves to secure the victory for the Spartans, who improve to 13-2 on the season.

No. 2 seed South Jefferson advances to play third-seeded New Hartford in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Brothers Academy.

LOWVILLE 3, SOLVAY 1

Espen Matuszczak scored two goals, including converting on a penalty kick, as the third-seeded Red Raiders rallied past the sixth-seeded Bearcats to win a Class B quarterfinal in Lowville.

Ryan Meleshchuk also scored a goal for Lowville (12-6), which advances to play in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.

Goalie Isaiah Spence made four saves to record the win for the Red Raiders.

Redd Long was credited with 18 saves for Solvay (13-5).

LYME 3, MATER DEI ACADEMY 1

Jonny LaFontaine generated all three goals to spark the third-seeded Lakers past the 11th-seeded Saints in a Class D quarterfinal in Chaumont.

Goalie Evan Froelich made eight saves to register the win for Lyme (16-2).

The Lakers will advance to play Hamilton in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at South Jefferson.

HAMILTON 2, COPENHAGEN 0

Nico Hay and Gavin Hames each tallied a goal to pace the second-seeded Emerald Knights past the seventh-seeded Golden Knights in a Class D quarterfinal at Hamilton.

Cooper Roy made three saves to post the shutout for Hamilton (13-5).

Aydan Sheitz finished with seven saves for Copenhagen (12-6).

MANLIUS-PEBBLE HILL 7, LAFARGEVILLE 1

Nick Lurvey generated five goals as the fifth-seeded Trojans defeated the visiting and 12th-seeded Red Knights in a Class D quarterfinal.

Goalies Abe Salomon and Liam Allen each made six saves to combine on the shutout for Manlius-Pebble Hill (14-3) against LaFargeville (8-7).

VOLLEYBALL

INDIAN RIVER 3, MADRID-WADDINGTON 2

Sydney Carbone totaled 17 kills, six digs and eight service points, including six aces, to propel the unbeaten Warriors past the Yellowjackets in a Northern Athletic Conference West Division match in Philadelphia.

Alyssa Ojeda contributed 22 service points, including eight aces, six kills and seven digs for Indian River, which won the match, 25-14, 21-25, 23-25, 25-10 and 15-13.

With the win, the Warriors clinched at least a tie for the division title.

Also for Indian River, Riley Hall tallied nine kills and 12 service points, including two aces, and five digs, and Lilian De Alba recorded 32 assists, 17 service points, including three aces, and 14 digs.

Also in NAC play, Clifton-Fine defeated Potsdam, 3-0, and Ogdensburg Free Academy topped Gouverneur, 3-0.
