THURSDAY

VOLLEYBALL

Braden River 3, Riverview 1

SARASOTA − The Braden River High volleyball team kept streaking in the right direction Thursday evening with a 3-1 victory over host Riverview High 25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 25-12 at the RHS Gymnasium.

In winning for the sixth straight time, the Pirates received 11 kills, 18 digs and a block from senior outside hitter Aryanna Spainhower, 9 kills, 2 aces, 15 digs and a block from senior outside hitter Brynna Sands, 15 assists and four digs from senior setter Mary Allison McGuire, 13 assists and six digs from sophomore setter Mia McGuire. Senior middle Ericka Freeman finished with six kills and two blocks for Braden River.

For the Rams junior middle hitter Gabrielle Meese (9 kills, 3 blocks), Nevaeh Babich (8 kills, 2 aces), senior middle Autumn Markey (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block), junior right-side hitter Violet Light (4 kills, 1 block) and senior outside hitter Quinn Shaner (4 kills) led the way with junior setters Bridget Gallagher and Mia Gagliardi distributing.

Climbing to second in the area behind Venice High in both MaxPreps (36th in the state) and the FHSAA power rankings (41st in the state), Braden River (12-2) plays Tuesday at Cardinal Mooney Catholic.

Riverview (6-7) is home Tuesday against North Port High before heading to Venice High on Thursday.

Braden River takeaways

1. The return of Mary Allison McGuire, who set most of last year, from injury has stabilized the lineup. In her absence, McGuire’s younger sister, sophomore Mia, handled the setting duties. “It’s good to have her back because you can rely on some experience there,” Braden River coach Matthew McElhiney said after his team went to 5-0 on the road. “It’s going to be an added benefit for us. She is going to have a better net presence, a better block. She can do a little bit more. Her sister is probably a better defender in the back row. They are balancing each other really well right now.”

2. The previous three matches came down to a fifth and deciding set for the Pirates, but some of that was self-inflicted. “Undisciplined,” McElhiney said. “They kinda got a little loose and went away from our game plan, and it created some easy points for them. Riverview, you give them a little bit of energy and confidence, and everything was finding the floor. It’s what we talk about every day. They caught fire in that third set.”

3. To the Pirates’ credit, they regained their composure and closed it out rather quickly in the fourth set. They scored the final seven points of the match. “Good response,” McElhiney said. “We regrouped and just ran with it. They went back to some basics, and they executed when they needed to.”

Riverview takeaways

1. The Rams stretched Braden River to a fifth set a week ago, but early mistakes put Riverview in a quick hole. Coming off a win Tuesday at Port Charlotte High, the Rams committed 25 errors in the first two sets that led to half of the Pirates’ points. “We could have showed up a little better tonight,” Riverview first-year coach Jason Mocherman said. “We had an amazing number of unforced hitting errors.”

2. There were encouraging signs in the third set. After falling behind 10-3 Riverview got even at 14-all. Then they scored 11 of the final 18 points of the set. “The pieces are there,” Mocherman said. “We’re a very new team. We put a whole bunch of players from all over the place together for the first time. Sometimes it works the way you want; sometimes it doesn’t. We played sloppy, and then we played well and then we played sloppy and we played well. That’s part of starting fresh.”

3. With five seniors, nine juniors and a sophomore, Mocherman is looking to rebuild the program. “We changed the way we do things. We changed the expectations on the players,” he said. “Really what we are looking for is girls who can finish a game like that, so the next day it looks better. We’ve got a long way to go.”
