HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: First MIAA Spring Power Rankings released and Friday highlights

The first MIAA power rankings of the spring season were released on Friday.

The Sandwich High boys lacrosse team stands as the highest-ranked team on Cape with the top spot in Division 4, while Nantucket (No. 8) is not too far behind. Nauset (No. 4 in Div. 2), and Falmouth (No. 9 in Div. 3) also made the top 10 in their respective divisions.

For the girls lacrosse rankings, Div. 4 had area three teams make the top 10 with Nantucket (No. 4), Sandwich (No. 6), and Cape Cod Academy (No. 7) all near the top. Falmouth (No. 6) also made the top 10 in Div. 2.

Boys tennis saw five Cape and Islands team ranked inside the top 10. Martha's Vineyard (No. 2) and Cape Cod Academy (No. 3) both made the top three in Div. 3. There are three teams ranked in the top 10 in Div. 4 with Monomoy (No. 5), Nantucket (No. 6), and Sandwich (No. 10).

Girls tennis is also having a strong spring with three consecutive Cape teams being ranked in the top 10 in Div. 4 with St. John Paul II (No. 4), Monomoy (No. 5), and Sturgis West (No. 6). Cape Cod Academy (No. 10) also joins the top 10 in Div. 3.

For baseball, Bourne (No. 3) and Upper Cape (No. 8) in Div. 5 were the only two teams to crack the top 10.

In softball, Bourne (No. 13) was the lone team to be ranked in the top 20.

As the lone boys volleyball team on Cape, Barnstable sits at No. 30 in Div. 1.

Baseball

Upper Cape 10, Tri-County 6: Tyler Kutil pitched six innings, striking out 10 for the Rams in the win. Logan Ewell had three hits and scored three runs. Asher Graff had three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs. Jacob Allen, Nolan Roache, Joe Urneck, Jared Coates and Nate Smith each had hits for Upper Cape (7-2).

Sturgis 10, Nantucket 3: Ryan Wisener pitched a three-hitter game in his first high start for the win. Ahmed Orthani had a key run off his first high school hit for Sturgis (3-2).

Sandwich 12, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: Jeremy Angeles allowed one hit over five innings on the mound for the Blue Knights in the win. Jack Mulcahy led the way at the plate with three hits for Sandwich (8-2). D-Y drops to 5-5 on the season.

East Bridgewater 12, Mashpee 2: The Falcons (6-3) snapped a three-game win streak with the loss.

Barnstable 6, Nauset 2: The Red Hawks (6-3) bounced back from Wednesday's loss to Falmouth with a win over the Warriors (1-8).

Martha’s Vineyard 4, Falmouth 2: The Vineyarders (3-6) won their first game over the last six with the victory over the Clippers (4-4).

St. John Paul II 15, Rising Tide 3: The Lions win their third straight as freshman Brian Mancinelli had the win on the mound as he struck out seven over four innings. Logan Our had an offensive outbreak at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two triples, and 10 RBIs for JPII (5-4), which had 11 different players with a hit.

Softball

Falmouth 5, Monomoy 4: Anna Velesig pitched a complete game with three strikeouts for the Clippers. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, four RBIs, including a three-RBI double in the fourth inning that gave the Clippers a 5-3 lead.

Kaylee Shaw was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Thalia Freire went 1-for-3 with a scored run for Falmouth (3-5). Monomoy falls to 4-5.

East Bridgewater 17, Mashpee 0: The loss drops the Falcons to 2-8.

Nauset 11, Barnstable 8: Kaylee Davis had her eighth straight win on the mound for the Warriors.

Timely hits by Ava Doyle, Molly Farrell, Audrey Silva, Ellie Cormier, combined with extra-base hits by Lili Hay, Jillian Parrott and Naomi Francis led Nauset (8-1) to the win over Barnstable (4-4).

Boys Lacrosse

Bourne 19, Upper Cape 7: Shea Ullo led the offense with five goals and four assists for the Canalmen. Ty Hawkes (three goals, three assists), Owen Surrette (three goals, assist) and Ryan Haden (three goals, assist) led the offense. Owen Beals and Brett Lucier both tallied two goals apiece. Sean Kelly and Brady Banks each tacked on a goal apiece. Stefan Lumsden was a physical presence on defense, and Max Beals had 15 saves in the win.

Sandwich 11, Plymouth South 3: For the second straight game, Connor Stack was perfect on faceoffs (15-for-15) and added three goals and two assists for the Blue Knights.

Cole Rodgers (two goals, three assists), Dan Oman (goal and assist), Avery Richardson (two goals, assist), Tyler McNeill, Sullivan Gaffney and Jack Connolly (a goal each), and Reece MacKinnon (2-for-2 on faceoffs, assist) all produced on offense for Sandwich (7-1). Shane Corcoran had 10 saves in net.

Nauset 14, Scituate 13: Andrew Berardi led the way offensively with five goals and an assist for the Warriors. Quinn Mucha (four goals, assist), Kevin Wright (hat trick), Peyton Kender (goal and assist), Riley Meehan (goal), and Cooper McIntire (two assists) all contributed on offense for Nauset (6-2).

Plymouth North 17, Dennis-Yarmouth 4: The Dolphins (2-5) dropped their second straight game.

Girls Lacrosse

Bourne 15, Upper Cape 9: The Canalwomen handed the Rams thier second loss of the season behind the offense of Madigan Kelly (seven goals, assist) and Tori Flaherty (six goals). Brooke Lunedei had a goal and two assists, Janice Bouchard and Heather Lapworth each added a goal, and goalie Caliegh Wrighter had six saves for Bourne (5-4).

Aryanna Turner had seven goals, Caitlin Greeley and Alaina Hines each had a goal, and goalie Molly Petty had four saves for Upper Cape (8-2).

Sandwich 14, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: Quinn Anderson (with an assist) and Ryann Cobban led the offense as each finished with a hat trick for the Blue Knights.

Avery Cobban, Riley Morrison,  Emma MacPherson, Katie Barrett, Meg Barrett, Julia O'Neil, Bella DiGiacomo, and Sophia Visceglio all had a goal for Sandwich (8-1).

Falmouth 11, Marshfield 9: The Clippers have (5-3) have won five of their last six after an 0-2 start to the season.

Boys Tennis

Martha’s Vineyard 5, Falmouth 0: Zay Potter defeated Bode Larsen in first singles (6-3, 6-0), Clyde Smith beat Thomas Ghossein in second singles (6-1, 6-0), and Jack Marshard defeated Dheer Brahmbhatt in third singles (6-0, 6-0) for the Vineyarders.

Teagan Myers/Caleb Dubin beat Sam Collins/Jack Dunn in first doubles (6-1, 6-0), and Kert Kleaman/Tommy Flynn beat Kunio Saito/Quintin Herfferan in second doubles (6-0, 6-0) for the sweep for Martha's Vineyard (4-0). Falmouth falls to 1-4.

Sandwich 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 2: Kallen Kestenbaum/Joey LaScola beat Adian Karras/Mike Reilly in first doubles (5-7, 6-1, 12-10 tiebreaker), and Quinn Johnston/Blaise Chatigny defeated Ryan Clark/Mykola Tretiakov in second doubles (8-6, 6-1) for the Blue Knights win.

Andrew Emmel beat Oscar Tuick in first singles (6-1, 6-2) for Sandwich (2-6).

Max Mingo beat Liam McLaughlin in second singles (6-0, 6-0), and Keegan McFarlane defeated Andrew Chanya in third singles (6-2, 7-5) for D-Y (0-5).

Bourne 5, Mashpee 0: Joziah Desouza beat Colin Burdge in first singles (6-2, 6-3), Quinn Schwefler defeated Andrew Kelley in second singles (6-3, 6-2), and Alex Fasoli won third singles (6-4, 6-3) over James Benham for the Canalmen.

Ben Hopwood/Ryan Burgess defeated Jesse Dean/Colby Rogers in first doubles (6-0, 6-0), and Cooper Gobiel/Sean Collins beat Matt Duvall/Jack Foley in second doubles (6-0, 6-1) for Bourne (5-5). The Falcons drop to 1-5 with the loss.

Cape Cod Academy 4, Nantucket 1: Conor Hall/Tommy Murray defeated Aiden Sullivan/Hawkin Edwards in second doubles (6-4, 6-2) to clinch the Seahawks win.

Luke Spinner defeated Quinn Keating in first singles (6-1, 6-4), and Ben Catalano beat Boyan Kalpazanov in second singles (6-0, 3-6, 10-2 tiebreaker) for Cape Cod Academy (5-1).

Nick Krusten defeated Griffin Mayo in third singles (2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 tiebreaker), and Henry Kathawala/Hunter Gross beat Ayden Naydenov/Kane Traywick in first doubles (6-2, 2-6, 6-0) for Nantucket (3-3).

Girls Tennis

Falmouth 3, Martha’s Vineyard 2: Alexis Christian/Maia Ledwell won first doubles (6-2, 6-1) over Sofia Balsas/Ellie Pennington, and Charlotte Bridges/Rachel Larsen defeated Elena Luciano/Sophie Roads in second doubles (6-0, 6-0) to clinch the win for the Clippers.

Genevieve Maranchie defeated Evelyn Brewer in second singles (6-1, 6-1) for Falmouth (4-0).

Cali Giglio defeated Caroline Moskal in first singles (6-1, 6-1), and Andrea Morse won third singles (6-2, 6-3) over Sadie Inman for Martha's Vineyard (3-3).

Bourne 3, Mashpee 2: Sofia Halunen/Cora McDonough won first doubles (6-4, 7-5) over Hannah Rogers/Grace Dion to clinch the win for the Canalwomen.

McKinley Wenzel defeated Piper Milde in second singles (6-4, 6-2), and Anna Conlon beat Deliyah Fortes in third singles (6-2, 6-4) for Bourne (3-7).

Mariele Henley won first singles over Zoe Ridl (7-6, (7-5), 6-3), and sisters Alina Doolin and Emily Doolin teamed up for the first time and won second doubles (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) over Addie Dion/Maeve MacLachlan for Mashpee (4-3).

Sandwich 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 2: Raighan Howard/Maryn Kestenbaum won second doubles (6-3, 6-3) over Willania Thompson/Marissa Teixeira to clinch the win for the Blue Knights.

Kaity Landry defeated Tristin Bradford in second singles (6-2, 6-2), and Kallie Thompkins beat Kelsang Gurung in third singles (6-3, 6-0) for Sandwich (2-7).

Olivia Boyer defeated Grace Rothera in first singles (6-3, 0-6, 6-2), and Elianna Shirley/Maddy Burgess beat Arianna Tedeschi/Chloe Cahoor in first doubles (1-6, 6-4, 7-5), a match that exceeded two hours for D-Y (0-6).

Longmeadow 5, Nauset 0: The loss drops the Warriors to 4-3.

Cape Cod Academy 4, Nantucket 1: The Seahawks (6-1) have won four matches in a row, while the Whalers drop to 3-5.

Boys Volleyball

North Quincy 3, Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks (4-5) snapped their three match win streak with a loss in three sets (11-25, 17-25, 13-25).
