HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Avellar and Kennard lead Nauset girls soccer in win

SOUTH YARMOUTH 9/21/23 Charlotte Westberg of Sturgis East turns to fire a second half goal defended by Lily Case of Barnstable

Olivia Avellar and Caroline Kennard led the Nauset High girls soccer team to a 6-0 win over Sturgis West for their first loss of the season on Thursday.

Avellar scored five goals, while Kennard handed out four assists and scored her first goal of the season assisted by Caroline Lovati. Freshman Maddie Cocorro, and junior Ellie Stewart played well in the midfield.

Girls Soccer

Sturgis East 6, Barnstable 0: Charlotte Westberg had a hat trick and dished out an assist, while Abby Jarvis scored a goal and handed out two helpers for the Storm (2-1). Kaitlyn Markowski and Brooke Salamone each found the back of the net too. Barnstable falls to 0-3.

Monomoy 4, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: Karah Deveau and Kiki Pigo Cronin each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (5-1). Rylie Gillis and Karlie Monteiro each scored as well, while Ava Larocco and Ciarra Terry each had an assist.

The Dolphins' (1-4) Arianna Corso (10th grader) played a lot of minutes with her aggressive defense, while ninth grader Hannah Ryan played well at midfield trying to push the ball up the field.

St. John Paul II 7, Nantucket 1: Addison Cheney led the way with three goals and one assist for the Lions (2-2-1). Raegan Dillon and Ella Cheney each added two goals and one assist. Emma Collette, Kayla Katziff, and Michaela Enright each added an assist, while Alex DePaula was very strong in goal for JPII.

East Bridgewater 5, Sandwich 1: The Blue Knights (3-2-1) have dropped two of their last three games.

Norfolk Aggie 3, Upper Cape 1: After winning two straight, the Rams (2-3) have lost their last two games.

Boys Soccer

Upper Cape 10, Norfolk Aggie 0: The Rams (5-0-1) continued their hot start to the season and remain unbeaten. Junior Sean Murphy scored 2 goals, while seniors Gideon Drury, Elijah Livramento, Jadon Barton, and Dylan Scott each scored each a goal. Sophomores Dimitrios Bariaktarias, Gabe Vasconcelos and Nikolas Voner each scored as well. Freshman Tyler Dmytryc was called up to play today and scored as well. Assists came from Livramento (2), Barton (3), Gideon (2) and sophomore Jacoby Staruski (1).

Nauset 6, Sturgis West 0: Omari Perry finished with a hat trick, while Charlie Cushing chipped in two goals and two assists for the Warriors (5-0). Paytah Dill added a goal, while Dominic Bebber had his third clean sheet of the year. The Navigators fall to 1-3.

Nantucket 1, St. John Paul II 0: The Whalers (2-2-2) secured the winning goal in the last two minutes of the game.

Sophomore Cody Boghdan played well for the Lions (1-2-2) with his defensive skills and field command.

Monomoy 2, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: The Sharks (5-2) won their straight with a close win over the Dolphins (2-3).

Mashpee 6, Southeastern 2: Ava Theodorides had a hat trick to lead the Falcons (2-4) to their second win of the season. Rhiannon Tokla, Isabela Mahoney and Ciara Hendricks each had a goal. Ayesha Shafi had 4 saves, while George Tompkins finished with three saves.

St. John Paul II 5, Sturgis 1: Avery Crapo (with an assist) and Mia Curley each scored two goals for the Lions (5-1) fifth straight win. Kaylee Anthony contributed a goal and a hat trick of assists, while Maeve Shortt added one assist. Sturgis falls to 1-2-1.

Nantucket 0, Dighton-Rehoboth 0: The Whalers (2-2-1) ended in a draw for the first time this season.

Field Hockey

Girls Volleyball

Rockland 3, Sandwich 0: The Blue Knights (3-4) got off to a rough start and never recovered as the Bulldogs won 25-17, 25-15, 25-20. Mia Mulcahy totaled 13 assists, and Alanna Schreibeis had five kills. Ella McCabe finished with four kills and two blocks, while Kaity Landry added three kills.

Mashpee 3, Carver 2: The Falcons (3-3) are back at .500 on the season after a five set win. Sophia Morin led the team in kills with 20.

Falmouth 3, Cardinal Spellman 1: After losing two straight matches, the Clippers (3-3) picked up a win (25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19) over the Cardinals. Leading the attack were junior middle hitter Maggie McLean with 12 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Erin Barr with 11 kills. Both are career highs for the duo.

Sophomore captain Christina Femino also a career high with 35 assists, while also recording two aces on 20 serves at 100%. Maia Ledwell (four aces), Azaria Viall, and Delia Roulston (three aces) were solid in the back row.

Boys Cross Country

Carver 27, Sandwich 28: The Blue Knights came up just short against the Crusaders.

Boys Golf

Bourne 273, Westport 284, Somerset Berkley 315: The Canalmen (6-1) picked up two wins in a tri-matchup at Brookside Golf Club. Griffin Kelly and Nate McDonnell led the way with 42s, while Ryan Burgess shot a 43. Luca Finton (44), Dana Leach (50), and Joziah DeSouza (52) rounded out the top six for Bourne.

St. John Paul II 244, Sturgis West 291: Senior tri-captains Jack Carstensen and Matt Curley shot a 37 and 39 respectively to lead the Lions (7-0) to a win at Willowbend Club course. The last tri-captain Timmy Adams and sophomore Chris Heywood each shot a 41. Mya Murphy led the Navigators (2-2) with a 39.

Upper Cape 9, Cape Tech 0: The Rams move to 6-2 after a win over the Crusaders (0-7). The low score for the Crusaders was shot by sophomore Brayden Wright with a 45.

Bishop Stang 147, Sandwich 215: Luke Greeley led the way for the Blue Knights (3-4) as he shot a 1 over par 37 at the Country Club of New Bedford.

Carver 90, Mashpee 39: Liam Hansford led the way with 13 points for the Falcons (0-6). Jackson Carlson scored seven points, while Jason Merkman (6), Michael Simone (6), Tyler Carderio (3), and James Banners (1) rounded out the top six.

Barnstable 239, Falmouth 261: The Red Hawks (5-2) picked up the win over the Clippers (2-3) at Hyannis Golf Course.

Nantucket 253, Sturgis East 315: The Whalers (4-2) have won three of their last four as they beat the Storm (0-5) at the Old Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf Course.

Cape Cod Academy 260, Rising Tide 300: The Seahawks (3-3) have won two straight.
