High school lacrosse: Kentucky tourney continues, Southwest Ohio league titles decided

Five Northern Kentucky boys lacrosse teams are still alive in the Kentucky Commonwealth Lacrosse League state playoffs.

Two teams will host second-round games Friday night. The quarterfinals are May 13, semifinals May 15 and the state championship May 18.

Friday’s second-round games are Cooper (12-9) at Frederick Douglass (15-4), Dixie Heights (7-7) at Covington Catholic (8-10), Sayre (10-7) at Ryle (8-7), and Walton-Verona (6-8) at Henry Clay (10-7).

A look at Northern Kentucky boys teams

CovCath is led on offense by seniors Jacob Hayduk, Evan Vinson and Alec Brenner. Hayduk has 35 goals, Vinson 27 and Brenner 25. Brenner has a team-high 27 assists and 96 ground balls.

Cooper junior Eric Wong has one of the highest scoring totals in Kentucky, with 82 goals and 28 assists. Ephraim Turner has 37 goals and 19 assists. He also has 131 ground balls.

Ryle is led by seniors Carson French and Michael Lanier. French has 33 goals and nine assists. Lanier has 29 goals, 16 assists and 99 ground balls. Bryson White has 28 goals and 21 assists. Jake Bailey has 23 goals and 32 assists.

Senior Tanner Spiller leads Walton-Verona with 31 goals, plus 13 assists. Junior Carter Daniels has 26 goals and 16 assists. Senior Lincoln Mann has 25 goals and seven assists. Senior Chris Watts has 18 goals and 23 assists.

The Bluegrass Bulldogs lost to WV in the first round of the tournament. Grant Stetter led the team with 14 goals and Brody Strotman had 15 assists. Lochland Carmichael had 64 ground balls.

Kentucky girls lacrosse teams bow out

All of Northern Kentucky’s girls lacrosse teams were eliminated by Louisville-area programs this week in the state playoffs.

Notre Dame lost to South Oldham and finished 9-11.

Ryle lost to Eastern and finished 7-12. Senior Lilly Haroules led the Raiders with 29 goals and nine assists, plus 46 ground balls. Senior Payton Sawyer had 21 goals and senior Bella Ingalls had 20 goals.

Cooper finished 10-10. Samantha Sandefur led the Jaguars with 81 goals and 27 assists. Lucy Hermann has 54 goals and 25 assists. Hermann led the team with 106 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers. Sandefur had 87 ground balls. Kathrynne Day had 26 caused turnovers.

Dixie Heights finished 0-15.

Southwest Ohio boys updates

The brackets for the Ohio High School Athletic Association are expected to be released Friday. Here is a look at local league champions.

St. Xavier, a state semifinalist last year, is 15-2 after beating defending state champion Dublin Jerome in overtime, 16-15, on Wednesday. The Bombers host another state power, Olentangy Liberty, 1 p.m. Saturday to end the regular season.

Mason, 12-4 overall, won the Greater Miami Conference for the fifth straight season. The Comets play at defending Division I state champion Dublin Jerome Friday to end the regular season.

Wyoming is 11-4 and plays at Kings Friday to end the regular season.

Kings, 16-1 overall, won the Eastern Cincinnati Conference with an 8-0 record. The Knights’ only loss was 10-8 to Springboro.

Fenwick won the Greater Catholic League-Coed at 8-0 and is 14-2 with the only losses to Dayton schools.

CHCA is 8-3 and 2-0 in the Miami Valley Conference.

Seton and Ursuline shared the title in the Girls Greater Catholic League after splitting their two meetings and finishing 7-1 in league play.

That was Seton’s only loss in the regular season, as the Saints rolled through most of their schedule. Ursuline is 12-6.

Sycamore won the Greater Miami Conference for the fifth straight season and is 14-1 overall.

Sycamore plays at Medina Saturday then ends the regular season at Indian Hill in a showdown of top programs.

Walnut Hills, 14-4 overall, won the ECC for the second year in a row Thursday night with a 19-6 win over Little Miami. Lauren Christy led the way with six goals.

Kings finished second with an 11-10 win over Turpin Thursday. Kings, 15-3, lost to Walnut 10-6 this season.

Fenwick tied Chaminade-Julienne for the GCL-Coed title at 6-2. Fenwick is 11-7 overall.

Indian Hill is 10-3 overall. The Braves have tied Mariemont and lost by one, 12-11, to CHCA.

CHCA, 13-2 overall, won the Miami Valley Conference with a 4-0 record. The Eagles have lost to Mariemont, 12-10. They have beaten several Division I Cincinnati schools this season, including Eastern Cincinnati Conference leadr Walnut Hills.
