High School Football: Huron rallies past Milan in overtime

MILAN – Micah Smith scored on a 10-yard run on New Boston Huron's first play of overtime as the Chiefs rallied from a two-score deficit to defeat Milan 20-17 Friday night.

Milan got the ball first in OT and Adam Johnson kicked a 27-yard field.

Smith took a handoff on Huron's answering drive and rushed for the winning score.

Milan led 14-0 at halftime. William Gaskell V found the end zone on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and then returned a blocked field goal 73 yards for another score in the second. Gavin Mick blocked the 30-yard attempt.

Gaskell finished with 27 carries for 226 yards.

"We really played a solid first half and had all the momentum," Milan coach Jesse Hoskins said. "We never really recaptured the momentum. ... Our kids absolutely played their hearts out and it's a tough way to lose being up 14-0 and then losing in overtime, but our kids should not feel one bit of shame or disappointment because we have a group of guys that are just fighting with everything they've got."

Huron scored twice in the third quarter to tie the game 14-14. Smith and Austin O'Dell had short scoring runs. O'Dell finished with 103 rushing yards on 18 carries.

Huron improved to 1-2 and host defending Huron League champion Riverview Friday. Milan (2-1) travels to Grosse Ile.

Grosse Ile 21, SMCC 20 (OT)

St. Mary Catholic Central went for the win in overtime but came up short on a two-point conversion run to fall to 1-2 this season.

Grosse Ile took a 21-14 lead on the first possession of the extra period. SMCC answered with a 5-yard TD reception from Ian Foster to Drew Harris on fourth down.

Evan Marcon scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter and Brady Hines tied the game at 14-14 with a 6-yard TD run in the third.

Marcon finished with 12 carries for 57 yards and Harris added 52 yards on 17 carries along with a pair of PAT kicks. Brock Cousino led the defense with 6.5 tackles and a forced fumble.

"I'm proud of our efforts trying to win, but we made a lot of mistakes tonight. So many mistakes," SMCC coach Adam Kipf said. "Defensively, we need to do a better job recognizing formations and do our jobs. Offensively, we need to be better with our blocks and better with the ball. We put the ball on the ground too much tonight."

Whiteford 26, Ottawa Hills (Ohio) 21

OTTAWA HILLS, Ohio – Jake Iott gave Whiteford its first lead of the game with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter and the Bobcats held on for a win over previously unbeaten Ottawa Hills.

The Bobcats trailed 7-0 after the first quarter, 7-6 at halftime and 14-6 through three quarters. After pulling within 14-12 in the fourth quarter, the Bobcat defense forced a Green Bear fumble that Iott scooped up and returned it 7 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Iott scored again with 2:48 to make it 26-14 to put the Bobcats in front for good.

“He is a tremendous competitor,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said. “There is no quit in that kid. He just goes all of the time.”

Whiteford (3-0) also got a touchdown on a Tre Eitniear to Ryin Ruddy pass and a Drew Knaggs short run.

Iott led the Bobcats with 89 yards rushing while Eitniear passed for 76 yards. Ruddy had 14 tackles and Iott 10 on defense.

“This is a huge win,” Thieken said. “This is as good of a football team that we’ll see all year.”

Summerfield 27, Springport 2

PETERSBURG – The defense came up big as Summerfield moved to 3-0 under new coach Dylan Szegedi.

“We’re still ironing things out on offense, but we played really good on defense,” Szegedi said. “We’re making it tough on ourselves, but we’re finding ways to win games.”

Quarterback Trace Secor threw a trio of touchown passes and ran 5 yards for a score. He completed 11-of-14 throws for 150 yards.

Tyler Dafoe (10 and 40 yards) and Brenden Myshock (7 yards), caught the scoring passes.

Gibraltar Carlson 57, Taylor 12

TAYLOR – Izaiah Wright started with scoring runs of 2 and 14 yards in the first quarter, then caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Joe Krolak early in the second as Gibraltar Carlson jumped out to a big lead.

The points kept coming on Krolak threw a TD pass of 52 yards to Landon Vida and Krolak (14 yards), Wright (43) and Avery Ortiz (65) ran for scores and Kenny McCurdy returned a fumble 20 yards.

Carlson (2-1) has posted a pair of Downriver League wins after dropping its opener to Airport.

Wright ran for 136 yards on 12 carries and Ortiz averaged 40 yards per carry with 120 yards on just 3 attempts.

“We dominated from start to finish,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “The kids came out excited. We’re starting to find our identity a bit.”

Dexter 44, Bedford 0

DEXTER – Dexter scored three touchdowns in a span of 8:12 in the second quarter to take a 31-0 lead into halftime.

The Dreadnaughts, who won 12 games and the Southeastern Conference championship last season, took out the frustrations of an 0-2 start on the Mules.

It is the first time Bedford has been shut out since losing 43-0 to Saline on Sept. 18, 2015. The Mules managed just 70 yards of total offense.

The Mules fell to 1-2 overall and host Saline next Friday.

Blissfield 33, Dundee 30

DUNDEE – Dundee recovered an onside kick trailing by 3 points with under 2 minutes remaining, but a potential game-winning drive ended in an interception.

Dundee went ahead 8-7 in the second quarter on a 45-yard TD pass from Ethan Layton to Braiden Whitaker. Blissfield returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards to retake the lead and then scored again on a short field after recovering a fumble just before halftime.

Whitaker added a 78-yard touchdown reception in the third.

Layton, subbing for an injured starter Ryan Zanger was 13-of-30 for 245 yards and ran for 90 yards. Whitaker finished with 6 catches for 190 yards.

"It just seemed like every time we got close, they would make some big plays," Dundee coach Steve Ayers said. "We made too many mistakes in just about every phase of the game offensively and defensively."

Northwood (Ohio) 42, Erie Mason 18

NORTHWOOD, Ohio – Erie Mason quarterback Vaughn Brown threw touchdown passes to Cole Kreger (60 yards) and Korbin Herrera (20 yards) and ran 1 yard for a TD.

Brown completed 14-of-25 passes for 248 yards.

Mason dropped its second straight game after a season-opening win over Jefferson.

The Eagles (1-2) play their next four games at home starting with Ottawa Hills (Ohio) next week. Ottawa Hills is 3-1.

Clinton 40, Ida 21

IDA – Ida put up a great battle until Clinton broke the game open with an 87-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

“It was a lot of back and forth,” Ida coach Jeff Potter said.

Gavin Albring ran for two Ida touchdowns and Dean Thomas had the other.

“I think we played better than last week, but still need to work on a lot of things,” Potter said of his 1-2 team.

Riverview 56, Jefferson 16

MONROE – Freshman Luke Beaudrie completed 14-of-25 passes for 196 yards and ran for 136 yards, but Jefferson dipped to 0-3.

Beaudrie threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Vanderpool, who had 7 catches for 126 yards.

Malachi Pribyl scored on a 5-yard run.
