HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Burk jumps Hirschi in latest TRN Top 10
The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoffs. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those in higher. But if a team in a higher classification doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher. Record and previous ranking are in parenthesis.
BOYS TRN TOP 10
1. Benjamin (16-1, 1) – The Mustangs met defeat for the first time this season, losing to the No. 3 team in TAPPS Class 3A, according to TABC. Grayson Rigdon still scored 44 points in the loss, which is just two points under his average for the season.
2. Holliday (28-2, 2) – The Eagles survived the most challenging portion of their schedule and are a win away from an undefeated run through the very competitive District 7-3A. That’s not a statement we thought would be written in preseason.
3. Burkburnett (22-8, 4) – Clearly, the difference between Burkburnett and Hirschi is minimal this season. The three games they have played this season have come down to the final possession and been decided by a combined seven points. Selfishly, we want to see this matchup played again to decide the No. 1 postseason seed.

4. Hirschi (13-11, 3) – So close. Both district meetings have seen a lead change in the final minute of the game. Hirschi got a key turnover and fast break layup 2 ½ weeks ago, pulling in front of the Bulldogs late. Now Burk has returned the favor. Hirschi drops back below the Bulldogs in these rankings because Burk holds a 2-1 edge on the Huskies this season, also beating them in Burkburnett’s tournament in December.

5. Knox City (26-2, 5) – The Greyhounds had four players reach double figures against Aspermont. And it wasn’t even the most balanced scoring performance by a local team Friday.
6. Nocona (22-11, 6) – We have mentioned several times how we didn’t expect an undefeated run through District 7-3A when referring to Holliday. We didn’t necessarily see Nocona achieving the same feat in District 9-2A, but the Indians are a win away from achieving it.
7. City View (17-10, 7) – The Mustangs got a big night from William Jordan II, who dropped 34 points in an 80-53 victory against Iowa Park. City View needs only to avoid an upset by Jacksboro to lock into District 7-3A’s No. 2 seed.
8 Electra (26-4, 8) – It was Electra with the most balanced scoring performance from Friday’s action. The Tigers had six players reach double figures in a 93-52 victory against Harrold with Jeremiah Murphy leading the way with 15 points.
9. Seymour (14-14, 10) – There’s not a bad District 9-2A loss on Seymour’s résumé. The Panthers will be the No. 2 seed, which moves them ahead of Vernon in these rankings.
10. Vernon (19-9, 9) – The Lions drop a spot after a 50-39 home loss to Holliday. It has more to do with the likelihood Vernon is going to be the No. 3 playoff seed, creating a tougher playoff path.

TUESDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH
No girls games are being listed. This is for boys district matchups only.
WFHS at Hirschi – The Coyotes are eliminated from the playoffs, but pride is often enough of a motivator in a crosstown rivalry. Old High can spoil the Huskies’ shot at a District 7-4A title.
Burkburnett at Gainesville – The Leopards gave Burk trouble in the first meeting. Gainesville is very athletic and matches up well with the Bulldogs.
