These high school athletes started off the year strong: Top performances from last week

Even if summer is still in the air, the fall sports season has begun and the results are rolling in, starting with golf action. Who has started hot and who still needs more time to get going? Who will be the teams to watch out for not only in September but into November?

OK, let's begin with the here and now. Another wild weather week and weekend couldn’t stop these football, soccer, field hockey, girls volleyball, golf and cross-country teams from thriving.

Who were the best of the best from Wednesday, September 6, through Sunday, September 10, 2023? Let's look at our Fantastic Five (plus a few):

JAKE ATTAWAY, Hudson football

The junior quarterback Attaway was 7-for-10 with 85 yards and a TD while also running for 120 yards and three TDs on 15 carries as the Hawks won their opener over non-league foe Clinton, 26-12. Junior running back/linebacker Garrett Giorgio had a strong day as well for Hudson, rushing 10 times for 48 yards, catching two passes for 29 yards and making eight tackles with an interception on defense.

LIZZIE BRYTOWSKI, Hopedale field hockey

The senior goalie made 15 saves as the Blue Raiders (0-1-1) tied Auburn, 0-0.

RAENA CRANDALL, Franklin field hockey

Crandall scored four goals and notched an assist as the Panthers won their opener over Oliver Ames on Thursday, 7-0. Emily Carney had a goal and two assists, while Haley Wernig and Addie Weiss (first varsity goal) had the other Panther tallies. Devon Barry made five first-half saves and Chloe Strassner had three second-half saves for Franklin. Sophia Cuneo had two assists while Lindsay Dennett and Chloe Essam added helpers.

MIKE DAVIDE, Franklin football

The senior running back rushed 36 times for 202 yards and four TDs as the Panthers opened with a 36-14 win over non-league foe Wachusett on Thursday night.

MAX DRESENS, Wayland football

The running back amassed 196 yards and two TDs on the ground in a tough 20-19 loss to host Hopkinton on opening night.

MILLA LEE, Dover-Sherborn girls soccer

The junior striker Lee scored all three goals as the Raiders (2-0-0) blanked host Wayland in a non-league match. Senior captain and defender Lilly Stocks played well and was instrumental in the shutout.

BEN LINCOLN / VINICIUS SILVA, Framingham football

Silva returned two punts for touchdowns (45 and 60 yards) and Lincoln ran for two scores as the Flyers defeated East Longmeadow, 35-7.

OWEN MONTALTO, Holliston boys soccer

Montalto scored both goals as the Panthers (2-0) beat Medfield, 2-1.

KYAH MONTANO, Nipmuc girls soccer

Montano scored a hat trick, and Anya Montano had a goal and an assist as the visiting Warriors (1-0-1, 1-0 Dual Valley) blanked the Blue Raiders, 4-0. Mia Herron and Tatum Loftus combined on the shutout.

SAM PANTERA, Hopkinton football

The senior wideout caught the tying 58-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Julian Rivard with 46 seconds to play, and Jon Winslow's extra point sealed it in a 20-19 win over Wayland. The TD was the exclamation point on Pantera's 12-reception, 205-yard showing.

FOOTBALL

BLACKSTONE-MILLVILLE/HOPEDALE 16, Bellingham 14: Daniel Lawton rushed for scores of 65 and 38 yards in the first half to give the Chargers an early lead, the defense notched a safety on a fumbled shotgun snap in the end zone, and the Chargers started the year with a home win. BMR freshman Carson Cournoyer sealed the victory with his second interception of the game with 1:05 left.

DEDHAM 20, Wellesley 13: Wellesley senior wide receiver Robby Broggi caught a pair of touchdowns, the first a 51-yard TD reception, but the Raiders lost their opener to the Marauders.

DOHERTY 34, Algonquin 0: Sophomore Ryan Denis had two scoring catches from Josh Romeo in the first half and also had an interception as the host Highlanders blanked the Titans, in a game that started Friday at Foley Stadium and finished Saturday at South High. Juan Reynolds, Malachi Burke and Derek Mukhuna rushed for TDs for Doherty, which was effective with sacks and causing turnovers in its opener.

FOXBOROUGH 18, Holliston 15: Junior wide receiver Connor Teague had five catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, but the Panthers lost their opener to the Warriors.

LINCOLN-SUDBURY 24, Methuen 14: Senior captain and quarterback Cooper Tarantino went 8-for-14 for 90 yards and two touchdowns, one to classmate Jake Haarde (3 catches, 67 yards) and the other to classmate Logan Umbach, as the Warriors opened with a non-league win over Methuen, a Division 1 state semifinalist a year ago. Senior captain Darius Braithwaite started the scoring for L-S with a 3-yard run. Junior Marcus Cassel went 3-for-3 on PATs and had a 43-yard field goal. On defense, Haarde and Blake Wessel each had interceptions. Senior LB Calvin Pendergast had a forced fumble and fumble recovery, while Umbach also had forced fumble and Peter Abair had a fumble recovery. The Warriors visit Needham on Thursday (6:30 p.m.).

MARLBOROUGH 28, Tantasqua 21: Miguel Borges rushed for two touchdowns in the second half, and the visiting Panthers held on to top the Warriors on Saturday. Marlborough's Michael Benway found Fernando Rodrigues for a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and teammate Javian Huertas returned an interception 73 yards for a TD in the fourth. Tantasqua's Adam Howe completed 17 of 24 passes for 249 yards and hit Jack Rapose (18 yards) and Isaac Colon (12) for touchdown plays. Tantasqua's Logan Arrastia added a 4-yard touchdown run to open the scoring in the second quarter.

MILLBURY 26, Assabet 6: Nathan Kozlowski tossed touchdown passes of 34 and 44 yards to Tyler Vaccaro as the host Woolies defeated the Aztecs. Kozlowski also threw for a 4-yard score to George Andrianopoulos, who added a 1-yard rushing touchdown for Millbury. Teammate Bryson McCarthy snagged an interception.

MILFORD 40, Bridgewater-Raynham 7: Senior Nick Araujo rushed for 96 yards and a TD on six carries while also making nine tackles and hitting field goals from 29 and 58 yards as the Scarlet Hawks earned a non-league win over the Trojans.

NIPMUC 38, St. Paul 14: John Walsh Karam rushed for a touchdown and Ryan Richmond had a one-handed TD reception as the Knights were topped by the visiting Warriors.

ST. BERNARD’S 22, Blackstone Valley Tech 13: Jarius Williams broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and Salvi Bilotta rushed for a 12-yard score and hit Quinn Carlson with a 44-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter as the visiting Bernardians held off the Beavers. Valley Tech's Alex Vosburgh found teammate Adam Fransen for touchsown passes of 19 and 30 yards to lead the Beavers.

UXBRIDGE 49, Maynard/AMSA 6: Camden LaChapelle ran for four touchdowns, and his brother Kellen threw for three more as the Spartans scored seven unanswered TDs to beat the Tigers. Liam Rigney (26 yards), Carter Gilmore (5) and Thatcher Sweeney (70) had touchdown receptions, while Tim Devlin had an 18-yard interception return to cap the scoring. Kicker Luke Esposito went 8 for 8 on extra points. Dylan Gallo hooked up with Kalvin Gomez for a 34-yard score in the first quarter for Maynard/AMSA.

BOYS SOCCER

AMSA 7, Parker Charter 0: Seniors Jason Job (assist) and Nick Silva each scored twice to power the host Eagles in their opener.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 2, Bay Path 0: Ryan Sauter scored and Matthew Drons had a goal and an assist as the host Beavers (2-0, 1-0 Colonial) blanked the Minutemen (1-1, 0-1). Grant Purcell made three save to post the shutout.

HOPEDALE 1, Nipmuc 0: Senior Kyle Maloney scored, with junior Mike Rutkowski assisting as the host Blue Raiders (2-0, 1-0 Dual Valley) edged the Warriors (0-1, 0-1). Senior captain Alex Lannibois with 7 saves for the shutout.

Hudson 1, Assabet 1: The Hawks (1-0-1) and Aztecs played to a draw in a non-league match.

FRAMINGHAM 2, Brookline 0: Senior goalkeeper Sam Alexander had the shutout and junior Nico Harutunian and freshman Sam Pacheco had the goals as the host Flyers blanked Bay State Conference foe Brookline in the opener at Fuller Middle School. The Flyers visit Concord-Carlisle on Monday.

FRANKLIN 3, Xaverian 0: Senior midfielders Noah Cain and Matt  Honnekamp and junior midfielders Garrett Scagliarini scored goals and the back four of Rex Cinelli, Sean O’Leary, Brad Herndon and Owen Munichiello all played well as the Panthers (1-0-1) blanked host Xaverian in Westwood.

Franklin 1, Oliver Ames 1: Senior Hansy Jacques scored on an assist from junior Garrett Scagliarini in a season-opening tie vs. Oliver Ames.

HOPEDALE 2, Bellingham 1: Senior Jonas Bernardes scored with six minutes left to win it for the host Blue Raiders in their opener. Freshman Guilherme Cardosa had Hopedale's other goal. Hudson Terando and Matt Carroll had assists. Senior Alex Lannibois had eight saves in goal.

HOPKINTON 5, Norwood 0: Senior forward and co-captain Jack Ianelli played well up top with a goal and an assist as the host Hillers (2-0-0) blanked the Mustangs.

MARLBOROUGH 5, Groton-Dunstable 0: Nicholas Labbe tallied two goals and Marcelo Silva Jr earned the shutout as the visiting Panthers (2-0) beat the Crusaders (0-2).

Natick 2, Wellesley 2: Senior Keller Berry scored two goals as the Redhawks (0-1-1, 0-0-1 BSC) earned a tie at Wellesley. The Redhawks host Brookline on Wednesday.

WESTBOROUGH 5, Groton-Dunstable 0: Sophomore Kaue Depaula scored twice in his first varsity game, and classmate Ryan Payant connected on a header in his debut to lift the visiting Rangers in their opener. Senior Robbie Coburn and Will Glassman also tallied. The Rangers host Algonquin on Monday (5 p.m.) and go to Leominster Tuesday (4 p.m.).

GIRLS SOCCER

AMSA 3, Parker Charter 2: Junior Riley Whittier and freshman Brooke Laudete each had a goal and an assist, while Brooke Ryan also scored with an assist by senior Elena Andersson as the Eagles opened with a road win. Katie Collins and Savannah Kulesis gave Parker a 2-0 lead at halftime.

FRANKLIN 3, Oliver Ames 0: Selene Hammad scored off an Alli Powderly corner followed by goals from Kelly O’Connor and Anya Zub (from Powderly) as the Panthers won their opener over OA. Hammad controlled the midfield throughout the game.

HOPKINTON 2, Brookline 1: Maddie Recupero and Brooke Bertwistle scored on assists from Georgie Clarke and Juliana Grontzos and Alex Clarke and goalkeeper Aila Chase excelled defensively as the Hillers (3-0) edged non-league foe Brookline.

HOPKINTON 6, Norwood 1: Mairin O’Connor and Nicole Tedstone had two goals apiece for their first career scores as the Hillers handled the Mustangs.

MARLBOROUGH 5, Groton-Dunstable 1: Ava VanBuskirk gathered two goals and two assists, while Emma Reynolds, Hadley Haas and Bella Miele added goals as the host Panthers (2-0, 1-0 Mid-Wach B) toppled the Crusaders (0-2, 0-1). Marlborough's Meghan Deneen had two assists. River Solomon scored for Groton-Dunstable.

MEDFIELD 3, Holliston 2: Senior Kaitlin O’Connell scored two second-half goals for the Panthers (1-1) in a loss to the Warriors.

NASHOBA 5, Hudson 0: Grayson Edwards had two goals, and Kat Davis scored and had three assists as the host Wolves blanked the Hawks in the opener for both teams. Raegan Englehardt and Maddie Dempsey added goals for Nashoba, with keepers Gina Braddock, Camden Grant and Hannah Benoit combining on the shutout.

NIPMUC 3, Weston 3: Kyah Montano, Abby Mullins and Julia Lenfest scored for the host Warriors in their opener, with Lenfest notching her first varsity goal. Emma Darling had the Wildcats' three goals.

FIELD HOCKEY

Holliston 1, Medfield 1: Freshman Anna Barrett scored a goal and sophomore Julia Galipeau had 18 saves as the Panthers (0-1-1) tied the Warriors.

HUDSON 4, Fitchburg 0: Sophomore Brianna Ouellette, junior Sophie Charbonneau and seniors Katie Szkarlz and captain Lila Rice all scored, while senior goalie Hannah Cruciol had three saves to earn the shutout win over Fitchburg.

Lincoln-Sudbury 1, Algonquin 1: Taylor Mieth scored for the visiting Titans (2-0-1), with Lindsey Brown assisting. Lincoln-Sudbury tied the game with a penalty stroke with six minutes left.

SUTTON 3, Blackstone Valley Tech 0: Claire Acocelli netted two goals, and Kat Quill chipped in one as the host Suzies (2-0) blanked the Beavers (1-2) on Friday. Allison Hasting posted the shutout.

ALGONQUIN 7, Marlborough 0: Lindsey Brown and Annelise Gingrich each scored three times, and Gabriella Lamuto had the other goal as the host Titans improved to 2-0.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 7, Bay Path 0: Ava Lozeau, Emily Sullivan and Lynsey Kay each scored twice, and Kaylie Ciccone netted the other for the host Beavers on Wednesday.

MEDWAY 5, Westborough 4: Taylor Payne, Abby Fiedler, Kenzie Gage and Talia Bedar scored, and Cayla Ehrlich had four assists for the host Rangers in a close defeat vs. non-league foe Medway.

SUTTON 2, Hopedale 1: Alison DaSilva and Kat Quill tallied for the visiting Suzies, with Camry Kinne assisting on Quill's goal on Wednesday. Emily Frohn scored for Hopedale with an assist from Lexi Carroll.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ALGONQUIN 3, Lincoln-Sudbury 0: Caroline Macaulay (10 kills, 2 aces, 9 digs) Julianna Zimmer (18 digs) Sophie Hjerpe (7 kills, 2 blocks) and Ava Arcona (23 assists 4 aces) lifted the host Titans (3-0) over L-S (2-1). Set scores were 25-17, 25-22, 25-14.

ASHLAND 3, Westwood 2: Junior outside hitter Siri Bachina had an ace, 20 kills and three blocks as the Clockers (1-1 overall, TVL) edged the host Wolverines, 25-22, 29-31, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12.

BELLINGHAM 3, Norton 1: Freshman Mia Milani had 15 kills, eight aces and six digs as the Blackhawks (2-0, 1-0 TVL) defeated the Lancers, 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-8. Junior Taylor Callery had eight assists and two kills.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 3, Tri-County 0: Nadia Shloul had eight kills, Lauren Gronda notched six kills and Paige Connolly tallied four aces and 12 assists to lift the visiting Beavers (3-0) on Friday. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 25-23. For the Cougars, senior Ava Cossette had 12 service points, six kills and 16 digs while senior Ivy Young added five kills and 13 digs and freshman Delia LeBlanc had 12 assists and 10 digs.

HUDSON 3, North Middlesex 0: Jennie Cassidy had three aces and 21 service points, 13 coming in third set as the host Hawks (1-1, 1-0 Mid-Wach B) swept the Patriots (0-1, 0-1). Teammate Molly Horton collected 19 service points and four aces, while Olivia Scafidi gathered 10 digs.

NIPMUC 3, Hopedale 0: Senior outside hitter Dana Schechter (8 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs), senior setter Kate Julian (12 aces, 16 assists, dig) and senior libero Laura Piekarski (12 digs, 2 aces, 2 kills) led the visiting Warriors (2-0, 1-0 Dual Valley Conference) to a sweep of the Blue Raiders. Set scores were 25-1, 25-11, 25-11. Phoebe Carroll (6 kills, 3 aces, block) and Mia Casey (3 kills) shined for Hopedale.

WESTBOROUGH 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: Senior Quinn Anderson (19 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) and sophomore Katherine O’Rielly (7 aces, 4 digs) boosted the visiting Rangers (2-0) on the Cape.

AMSA 3, Monty Tech 1: Abby Asman had nine aces and five kills, Bella Rand collected 12 digs, 6 kills and 5 aces and Cassie Fiore gathered four aces and 10 assists to propel the Eagles (1-1, 1-1 CAL). Josany Diaz (ace, kill, 8 assists, 3 digs), Deanna Smith (kill, 7 digs) and Jordin Sawyer (2 aces, 3 digs) led the visiting Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1). Set scores were 25-16, 15-25, 26-24, 25-19.

ALGONQUIN 3, Hudson 1: Ava Arcona (16 assists), Julianna Zommer (26 digs) and Caroline Macaulay (13 kills, 8 digs) boosted the host Titans (2-0) on Wednesday. Set scores were 13-25, 25-9, 25-22, 25-16. Hudson junior outside hitter Jennifer Yates had nine kills.

BELLINGHAM 3, Blackstone-Millville 1: Sophomore Val Nolan had 17 kills, nine digs and five aces and freshman Sophia Soto had 13 digs and two aces as the Blackhawks won their opener over BMR, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19. Alexis Chartier (9 kills, 3 blocks), Caroline Tarnuzzer (5 kills), Chloe Landry (3 blocks) Kayla Niemczyk (4 kills, 9 digs) contributed for the visiting Chargers.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 3, Abby Kelley 0: Emma Shum had five kills and an ace, Danika Kirby notched four kills and Paige Connolly gathered five aces and 15 assists as the Beavers (2-0, 2-0 CAL) swept the visiting Bears (0-2, 0-2).

HOPKINTON 3, Ashland 0: The Hillers swept the season-opener, 25-13, 25-12, 25-21. Sophomore middle blocker Gabby Van Beek had six kills, two blocks and an ace for the Clockers.

LINCOLN-SUDBURY 3, Weston 2: Joyce Li had a triple-double with 11 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs as the Warriors earned a win over the Wildcats. Maddie Gulko had a team-high 18 digs and team-high seven aces for L-S.

NORFOLK AGGIE 3, Tri-County 2: Freshman Delia LeBlanc led the Cougars with 18 service points, including a seven-point run in the fourth set, as the Cougars (1-1) dropped a five-set affair, 15-25, 20-25, 25-20, 27-25, 12-15. LeBlanc added 20 digs and 22 assists on the day. Senior Ava Cossette added 17 service points, seven kills and 22 digs while senior Ivy Young chipped in 11 service points, six kills and 20 digs.

NORTON 3, Medway 1: Alicia Pacheco had 14 digs, but the host Mustangs lost their opener to the Lancers, 25-23, 11-25, 17-25, 20-25.

WESTBOROUGH 3, Nashoba 0: Senior Maggie Cardin notched four blocks and three aces and junior setter Samantha Noonan chipped in 17 assists and an ace as the host Rangers opened by sweeping the Wolves. Set scores were 25-14, 25-12 and 25-10.

GOLF

ST. JOHN’S (SHREWSBURY) 222, Algonquin 246: Cael Duggan, Nic Gebhardt and Cutis McDonald all carded 36 as the Pioneers (2-0) defeated the Titans (2-2).

AMSA 166, Assabet 166: Cody Pare (1-over 36) and Dylan Rebeiro (4-over 39) helped the visiting Aztecs (0-0-1) tie the Eagles (1-1-1) at Southborough CC on Wednesday.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 150, Bay Path 180: Connor Griffin shot 1-under 34 at Heritage to lead the Beavers (3-0) past the Minutemen (1-1) on Wednesday.

HOPEDALE 171, Douglas 192: Lucas Levasseur and Colin Haynes each shot 4-over 40 at Blissful Meadows as the visiting Blue Raiders (4-1) won their Dual Valley Conference opener on Wednesday. Andrew Hogan was medalist for the Tigers (0-1), carding 39.

WACHUSETT 208, Algonquin 221: Perry Flagg shot 2-over 38 at Bedrock, leading the host Mountaineers (2-1, 1-0 Mid-Wach A) past the Titans (2-1, 1-1).

WHITINSVILLE CHRISTIAN 174, Sutton 178, Nipmuc 185: Micah Deters shot 3-over 39 at Shining Rock as the visiting Crusaders topped the Warriors (0-3) on Wednesday. Connor Silva carded 41 at Shining Rock while lifting the Sammies.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

BLACKSTONE VALLEY TECH 18, AMSA 45: Soumith Madadi (first, 17:45), Deven Arthur (second, 18:19), Cullen Lawler (fourth, 18:22) and Matt Phelps (fifth 18:28) lifted the host Beavers (1-0, 1-0 Colonial) over 3 miles. Gabe Casanas (18:21) placed third to pace the Eagles (0-1, 0-1).

GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

AMSA 22, Blackstone Valley Tech 40: Katelyn Massey (first, 20:01), Ava Georger (third, 22:01) and Cathleen Galvin (fourth, 22:36) guided the visiting Eagles (1-0, 1-0) over 3 miles. Chloe Vescio (second, 20:40) and Mara Keane (fifth, 22:38) led the Beavers (0-1, 0-1).
