High Desert Sports Roundup: Victor Valley continues dominance at the DSL wrestling finals

Three days after capturing a 14th straight league title, the Victor Valley wrestling team dominated at the Desert Sky League Finals on Saturday afternoon.

Nine wrestlers from the Jackrabbits boys team claimed titles, while three girls also reached the top of the podium.

Jose Rodriguez earned the upper-weight MVP award, after pinning Adelanto’s Jack Ramos in 30 seconds for the 159-pound title.

Rodriguez spent less than a minute on the mat in his two matches. To reach the title match, Rodriguez pinned Silverado's Korey Rangel in 21 seconds.

Rodriguez is one of six boys from Victor Valley that also captured titles at last year’s DSL Finals. Cesar Sandoval (113), Avian Singh (146), Cruz Duardo (152), David Camacho (167) and Jesse Cardona (177) each reached the top of the podium in their divisions.

For Granite Hills, Jayden Autry claimed the 134-pound title by pinning Victor Valley’s Isaac Tellez at the 1:12 mark. Autry, who earned third place at the DSL Finals last season, pinned Barstow’s Abdon Rodriguez to reach the title match, and was named the lower-weight MVP.

Adelanto had three wrestlers claim a title, while Barstow was represented by one boy atop the podium.

In girls action, Victor Valley’s Leilahni Hart took the lower-weight MVP award and Excelsior’s Itzel Padilla was named the upper-weight MVP.

Padilla and Hart were both one of three girls for their teams to reach the top of the podium. Adelanto also had three girls claim titles.

Padilla pinned Granite Hills' Sara Salas to reach the title match, which she also won by pinfall at the 5:48 mark against Big Bear's Saquoia Dubuque.

Padilla was joined by teammates Genesis Dalton (145) and Jerzi Tully (140).

Hart pinned Granite Hills' Alice Perteet at the 1:22 mark, and also pinned Excelsior's Dasani Estrada. Hart was joined atop a podium by teammates Ellie Myer (120) and Natalie Gonzales (170).

All top-three wrestlers in each division advance to the CIF-Southern Section individuals tournament next month.

Hesperia 78, Serrano 28

At Phelan, the Scorpions improved to 6-0 in league action with a big victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Hesperia made 32 shots in the victory, with 26 assists. Mark Jones led the way by dishing 13 assists.

Points wise, Antony Newman Gomez led Hesperia with 17 points, and Tarron Grim scored 14 points with seven rebounds.

The Scorpions (16-8) are back in action on Jan. 24 at home against Burroughs.

Oak Hills 73, Apple Valley 27

At Apple Valley, the Bulldogs got back in the win column after losing to Hesperia with a well-balanced attack on Friday night.

Five players scored in double figures with Isaiah Sharky leading the way with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Mar Landry added 12 points; Jaylen Contreras and Markel Brown both scored 11 points; and Mo Rios chipped in 10 points.

Oak Hills (15-9, 5-1 MRL) is back in action Jan. 24 at home against Sultana.

Adelanto 76, Barstow 32

At Barstow, the Saints inched a step closer to the Desert Sky League title with a huge victory over the Aztecs on Thursday as Joshua Mayers notched a triple-double.

Mayers racked up 12 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks for Adelanto.

Kimo Brown Jr. led the way with 21 points, with O’Shaun Rodriguez right behind at 18 points. Lajai Jackson added 10 points to give the Saints four players in double figures.

The Saints resume DSL action on Jan. 23 at home against Granite Hills, and could possibly clinch the league title on Jan. 25 at Silverado.

Granite Hills 62, Silverado 49

At Apple Valley, the Cougars wrapped up the first round of league action with a victory over the Hawks on Thursday night.

Christopher Dominguez led the way for Granite Hills with 30 points. It was his second 30-point performance of the week as he also reached that mark in an 87-43 victory over Barstow on Jan. 16.

The Cougars are currently in second place in the DSL standings and will take on Silverado on Jan. 22.

Prep Girls Basketball

Hesperia Christian 50, University Prep 22

At Victorville, the Patriots improved to 6-0 in Cross Valley League action with a victory over the Jaguars as two players notched double-doubles on Friday night.

Kailey New led the way for Hesperia Christian with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Peyton Houlemard scored 12 points with 10 rebounds.

Elyse Vander Weide added six points and seven rebounds.

The Patriots (12-4) are back in action on Jan. 23 at home against Big Bear.

Prep Boys Soccer

Granite Hills 6, Silverado 0

At Apple Valley, the Cougars celebrated senior night with a big victory over the Hawks on Jan. 18.

Acxel Jimenez led the way with three goals with two assists.

Erick Valdovinos scored a pair of goals, and Kavi Cruz scored the other goal.

Oscar Mendoza, Nate Rodriguez, Ray Rocca and Diego Perez each had an assist.

On Jan. 16, the Cougars also beat Barstow 6-0. Valdovinos scored a hat trick with an assist in the victory.

Rodriguez scored two goals, Jimenez scored a goal and an assist; and Perez assisted on three goals.

Granite Hills heads to Adelanto on Jan. 23 in a battle for first place in the DSL standings.

Prep Girls Soccer

Serrano 1, Hesperia 0

At Phelan, Aubrey Hendrix scored a goal three minutes into the second half to lift the Diamondbacks past the Scorpions on Friday night.

Hendrix scored her goal off an assist from Mackenzie Bowman.

Goalkeeper Addison McDaniel recorded one save for the clean sheet.

Serrano's (5-8-4, 3-2-1 MRL) is on the road on Jan. 24 at Apple Valley.

Granite Hills 12, Silverado 0

At Victorville, Daijah Reymond scored four goals with an assist in a huge victory over the Hawks on Thursday.

Marisah Nolan scored two goals and dished four assists; Carina Duran and Lianna Tsabur each scored a pair of goals; Calie Hitt and Mia Perez both scored a goal; and Islet Montes, Amy Mejorado, Layla Lobato and Beautiful Hayes each had an assist.

On Jan. 16, Tsabur scored two goals as the Cougars beat Barstow 3-2 to wrap up the first round of league play.

Lobato scored a goal, while Julia Alvarado and Duran each had an assist.

For Barstow, Caliana Chaco and Madalynn Ayala each scored goals.

Victor Valley 7, Silverado 0

At Victorville, Saydee Gardner scored four goals with two assists to lead the Jackrabbits past the Hawks on Jan. 16.

Jasmine Porras, Linsey Carmon and Mia Rodriguez each scored a goal, while Britney Garcia, Amber Saldana, Hayley Chavez and Madai Ibarra each had an assist.

The Jackrabbits are back in action on Jan. 23 at home against Barstow.
