Hendricken ace Alex Clemmey is Gatorade RI Baseball Player of the Year

You can add 2022-23 Gatorade Rhode Island Baseball Player of the Year to Alex Clemmey's already impressive resumé. The 6-foot-6 senior lefthander has compiled a 6-1 record with a 0.59 ERA to lead the Bishop Hendricken Hawks to a 19-1 record and a berth in Rhode Island’s Division I state baseball tournament.

A Vanderbilt commit, Clemmey struck out 84 batters in 35⅔ innings and allowed just seven hits to the 137 batters he has faced entering the playoffs. He is ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the Class of 2023 by Perfect Game, No. 2 prospect in New England by PrepBaseballReport.com and the No. 45 overall prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft by Baseball America.

"Guys like him don’t come around often,” said Lincoln High School baseball coach Steve Reynolds. “He’s a 6-foot-6 lefty who throws the ball 98 mph and can drop a slider or curve for a strike in any count. How can any high school hitter do anything with that? He’s nasty.”

Off the field, Clemmey has volunteered with the Southern Area Special Olympics as well as on behalf of multiple baseball camps as an instructor. Clemmey has maintained a B average in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Vanderbilt University this fall, but is projected to be an early-round selection in July’s 2023 Major League Baseball Draft.

Clemmey joins recent Gatorade Rhode Island Baseball Players of the Year Ben Brutti (2021-22, South Kingstown), Brandyn Durand (2020-21, Bishop Hendricken), Brad Lombardi (2019-20, Bishop Hendricken), and Tucker Flint (2018-19, Bishop Hendricken), among the state’s list of former award winners.

The Gatorade Player of the Year Award recognizes both outstanding athletic excellence, as well as high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Clemmey is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.
