Harry Kane has Bayern Munich medical with transfer from Tottenham almost complete

By Matt Law, Football News Correspondent

Harry Kane is putting the finishing touches on his move to Bayern Munich after he flew to Germany to complete a £120 million switch from Tottenham Hotspur.

One of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer came to an end as Kane arrived at the Brothers of Mercy Hospital in Munich to undergo a medical. His contract with the Bundesliga champions is expected to run for four years.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admitted he knew from day one he would lose the England captain this summer.

Asked if he knew Kane would go as soon as he accepted the job, Postecoglou replied: “Yeah, pretty much.

“It wasn’t part of the contract negotiations that I needed certain players to stay. You do due diligence when you take a job and, hopefully, I was well researched enough to know what was going on in the background. You have these conversations with people and it was in the public arena.

“When a player of Harry’s stature is going into the last year of his contract you don’t need too much investigative research to know what’s going on. I knew going into it that this was the most likely outcome.”

Postecoglou’s gut feeling was underlined during his first-ever conversation with Kane after the striker returned for pre-season training and the writing was on the wall once Bayern made their first bid.

“If you’re involved in the football business as long as I have [you know] clubs aren’t talking to each other unless the player knows about it,” said Postecoglou. “We weren’t negotiating with Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven and then trying to figure out if he wants to come to us. All those kinds of things are decided.

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day arrived and he was up front and honest, and I was the same. You kind of get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind that if the clubs agreed he would go, particularly if it was before the first game. That was my preference as well. There’s nothing along the way that’s sort of made me feel there’s anything other than this outcome.

“None of these things happen in isolation, everyone is pretty clued into what’s going on, so from my perspective I hadn’t received anything from Harry, the club or anyone else to suggest to me anything had changed about his stance.”

Having already spent around £150million this summer, Postecoglou suggested he is not planning a late trolley dash over the closing weeks of the transfer window and that it will take more than one player to make up for the loss of Kane - which he has based his preparations for Sunday’s opening Premier League game against Brentford around.

“I don’t think there is a like-for-like replacement for Harry, but we’ve been planning for this, it’s fair to say, for a while,” said Postecoglou. “It doesn’t take too much investigative work to realise that this was going to happen, so a lot of our business up to now is with that in mind.

“This doesn’t change things dramatically from my perspective anyway in terms of what we’re trying to build. There is still movement in the squad, absolutely. We’ve still got a fairly big squad and we need to move out some players. I think some players will seek an opportunity elsewhere and there are still three or so weeks to go in the transfer window so I think there will still be movement but not because Harry has gone, that’s always been in the plan.

“Knowing if Harry was going to leave, that’s a fair few goals walking out of the door and knowing you can’t just replace that with one player,” said Postecoglou. “An area of the club that needed bolstering was the midfield threat in terms of goals, and that’s what Madders [James Maddison] provides - goals and assists.

“If we’ve going to cover the fact that Harry’s gone and all the goals are leaving with him, we’re going to have to spread that out and Madders provides that. He’s been brilliant since he’s come in, he’s been outstanding. Not just in the games but in training and the way he’s embraced the club and developed in the football we want to play.”

Postecoglou did offer encouragement for Tottenham fans upset at Kane’s departure by saying: “He’ll definitely be back at Tottenham one day in one capacity or another. When you have a career like he has at one football club, you’re never not part of it.”

Alan Shearer: 'Kane should have left two years ago'

Alan Shearer has said that if Kane had asked him for advice, he would have told the England captain to leave Spurs much sooner.

Shearer’s comments came as part of a live Q&A for the Athletic in which he answered readers’ questions about the Kane transfer saga.

Asked if the England captain had sought his advice, Shearer responded: “I’ve spoken to [Kane] plenty of times and I’ve offered him my support at various points of his career, but no he hasn’t asked me for advice.

“If he had asked me, I would have told him to leave Spurs two years ago!!!”

Shearer earlier today tweeted a mock-up of of himself dressed as a pilot, captioned: “Come on Harry it’s time to go!”.

This was seemingly a light-hearted jest, based on the fact that Kane is just 47 goals behind Shearer’s Premier League goal scoring record of 260.

Chelsea axe deal to free up funds for Caicedo bid

Chelsea have pulled out of their deal to sign Tyler Adams despite the USA midfielder undergoing a medical ahead of a move from Leeds United.

The 24-year-old did medical checks on Thursday and was on the brink of a deal worth around £20million, only for the process to breakdown and Chelsea pull the plug today.

Sources at Chelsea say the move breaking down was not linked to Liverpool bidding £111million for Moises Caicedo and jumping ahead in the race for the Brighton midfielder. However, other sources believe the scrapping the deal was connected to breaking the UK transfer record for Caicedo.

Adams has been subject to other interested clubs during the summer window and is expected to eventually move before the transfer deadline on Sep 1.

Harry Redknapp "surprised" by Kane's decision

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports he was surprised at Kane’s decision to leave Spurs and described the striker as “irreplaceable”.

“I thought he’d stay at Tottenham at least for another year and then maybe see his contract out,” said Redknapp. “Bayern’s a great club don’t get me wrong, but I just couldn’t see him moving. I really am surprised.

“For me he’s the best centre forward in the world. He can do absolutely everything. He’s irreplaceable basically, so not a great day for Tottenham fans.”

Redknapp added that the timing of the move, on the brink of the new Premier League season, has left Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in a “difficult position”.

“I was surprised. You thought it would have been done sooner. It’s been dragging on,” he said. “It’s left the manager in a difficult position.”

More from the Postecoglou presser: Kane's lack of silverware

Kane is often regarded as the best player if his generation never to have won a major trophy.

Addressing whether the striker’s inability to win anything with Spurs will have an impact on his legacy at the club, Postecglou said: “I think that’s a little bit unfair on Harry.

“They’ve got close a couple of times but that’s the reality of this business that until you lift the trophy, that kind of thing is always sort of branded against you.

“That doesn’t diminish his contribution and I think it’s only fair that on a day like today our supporters do have a sense of mourning and loss, because irrespective of the lack of success at the club, he has been a hero to them and he will continue to be so. Again him going doesn’t change my vision of what I’m trying to bring to this football club.”

Pochettino: 'We are working hard to try to add more quality'

Mauricio Pochettino declined to elaborate on the Moises Caicedo transfer, speaking today at Stamford Bridge rather than Cobham ahead of his team’s preparations for Sunday’s game against Liverpool.

He said: “I’m not going to talk about players who do not belong to us. I think that is pretty important to be respectful with all the clubs and the player. Like any club, we are working hard to try to add more quality and of course to reinforce the team, the squad. We are working hard, I am so happy in the way we are doing things with [co-technical directors] Paul [Winstanley], Laurence [Stewart] and the owners. The relationship is really good and really close. So far, so good. We are so happy to work in this way.

The Chelsea manager also left the injury update until after he had left – to be delivered by a club official. Chelsea confirmed Matt Law’s story that Christopher Nkunku will be out until December. He is starting his rehabilitation as of today which is expected to be 16 weeks following an operation on his knee. The original injury was sustained on pre-season in Chicago.

As for the other injured players, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja and Benoit Badiashile are closest to returning to fitness. Defender Wesley Fofana is in the early stages of rehabilitation, as is goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

Pochettino has made Reece James the club captain following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta. He said: “He is not only a player that can be a leader, his character, his qualities. He is present and he is going to be the future also, he came through the academy. For me and the club he is a perfect player, person to be a captain.”

Pochettino has already changed one Stamford Bridge convention. He and his staff and substitutes will occupy the other dugout and benches previously reserved for the away team. It is the bench that away team managers turn right out the tunnel to reach. Pochettino said it offered more space and was better placed. “The decision was the day we signed here and the club agreed with me,” he said. “Breaking news, we are moving to the right.

“I don’t know if it’s lucky, I think it’s the best because it’s bigger, because you are in the middle, you are at home and you control everything, for me that is important. It was strange that they gave me the best position when I was [away team manager with] Southampton and Tottenham and it was always a thing I was thinking. The kitman showed me a picture of the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ [Spurs’ visit in May 2016] and it was like we were at home. Small details make the difference.”

Caicedo predicted it...

“I’m sure I’m going to have many more opportunities,” were the words of Moises Caicedo in an exclusive interview with Telegraph Sport after seeing Brighton bat away interest in him from both Arsenal and Chelsea last season.

Of the prescience of the Ecuadorian. He predicted opportunities and they have come knocking only this time it feels the final outcome may finally be one the player, and his agent, want.

Everything you need to know

More from the Postecoglou presser

Addressing the question on all Spurs fans’ lips - how to replace Harry Kane - Postecoglou said: “I don’t think there’s a like for like replacement for Harry.

“We’ve been planning for this, fair to say, for a while. It doesn’t take too much investigative work to realise that this was going to happen. A lot of our business up to now reflects that.

“I don’t think it works that way [giving Daniel Levy a list of strikers to get]. It’s not like the family shopping list to go and get milk and bread for the kids. My whole strategy has been that Harry was unlikely to be around so it wasn’t like we had a pow wow this morning.”

Brighton coach: 'I've already forgotten Moises"

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has called for the club to move on despite the loss of Caicedo, The Athletic’s Andy Naylor reported.

De Zerbi said: “I’ve already forgotten Moises.

“I’m really proud of the players we have in the squad. We have to complete the squad. We want to improve the squad because we lost Mac Allister, Colwill, maybe we lose Caicedo, but we have to be ready.

“When players leave it’s because they played well, but the credit goes to the players, the club and the coaches. The big clubs can buy the players, but they can’t buy our soul and spirit. That’s not on the market when they leave.”

Ten Hag claims no regrets over targeting Hojlund instead of Kane

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has insisted there are no regrets over targeting Rasmus Hojlund instead of Harry Kane.

Kane was a long-term target for United but they focused on Hojlund earlier in the summer and completed a £72million deal, with Tottenham then accepting a bid for Kane from Bayern Munich on the eve of the season.

“First of all, we have chosen a striker and we are really happy with our choice,” said Ten Hag. “He (Kane) is a great striker, clear, a goal maker and apart from that he has all the conditions and abilities what you want to see in a striker. It’s a miss for the Premier League, absolutely and we wanted to challenge ourselves against the best.

“We are professional, the processes we do are really careful, we consider a lot of things but finally we make decisions, not overnight, we study every decision behind, we are happy with the squad we have behind us now.”

Hojlund had a back injury and will miss the season opener against Wolves on Monday, but Harry Maguire will be in the squad according to Ten Hag. Maguire has been subject of a bid from West Ham.

“So as we said previously, he (Hojlund) had a small issue and he’s not on the levels where our players are in this moment so we have to train him. Prognosis [is] difficult always to say. We are confident and we are positive,” said Ten Hag.

When asked whether Maguire will be in the squad to face Wolves, Ten Hag said: “Of course.”

Postecoglou: 'Confirmation on Kane expected in next couple of hours'

Addressing the seemingly imminent deal, Postecoglou said: “While it would have been great to have it sorted earlier I always through it was going to be borderline.

“The one thing I was clear on was going into the first game with stuff undecided. It has happened, hopefully we’ll have confirmation over the next couple of hours.”

01:51 PM BST

Postecoglou on whether he tried to convince Kane to stay

Postecoglou said: “I didn’t see the point in that [trying to convince Harry Kane to stay], whatever I was going to say was going to be irrelevant.

“My feeling was that we’ll get to know each other and that would be the best way to navigate the early relationship.

“Having said that, in my mind I thought he’d already decided to go after the first conversation. I tried to treat him with the respect his standing deserves.

“I don’t get frustrated by these things. I’ve been involved in the negotiations side but it’s never a simple process. Harry Kane is one of the greats of this football club and there must have been some torment inside.

01:39 PM BST

Postecoglou on Kane's standing at Tottenham

The Tottenham coach said: “It’s best Harry speaks for himself on the decision but there’s no doubts he’s one of the greats of this football club.

“His record speaks for himself.

“I’m only new in the building but I’m certainly not the spokesman for this football club in declaring people’s status but I think it’s clear Harry Kane is one of the greats.”

01:38 PM BST

Postecoglou: On life without Kane

Addressing life without the England captain, Postecoglou said: “We’ve been planning for this, it’s fair to say, for a while.

“It doesn’t take too much investigative work to realise this was going to happen. A lot of our business so far has been with this in mind. It doesn’t change my plans dramatically.

“There’s still movement in the squad and it’s a big squad with players we need to move out. There are three or so weeks to go in the window.

“I had a conversation with Harry [Kane] on day one and we were both up front. I got an indication there that if both clubs agreed he would go.”

The new Tottenham coach also voice frustration about how long it has taken to come to an agreement for the striker.

“My preference was that it would be sorted before the first game,” he said. “These things don’t happen in isolation and everyone is clued up. I haven’t received any news from anyone about Harry’s decision changing.”

Ange on Kane transfer: "It's going to happen"

Speaking at a press conference, Tottenham manage Ange Postecoglou said: “Fair to say I don’t have a blow by blow account but my understanding it’s progressed to the point where it’s going to happen. That gives us some clarity unless something unforeseen happens that we move forward without Harry.

“From my perspective it’s just about understanding where we are at and my information is the deal is imminent. Moving forward and with training today and looking to Brentford, we’re going without Harry.

“It’s best Harry speaks for himself but no doubt he’s one of the greats of the football club and that doesn’t change. It’s fairly evident that Harry Kane will always be one of the greats of this football club.”

What is Pochettino saying?

Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino said he was “working hard” to bring in new signings but declined to comment on Moises Caicedo directly.

Speaking at a Chelsea press conferences, he said: “I never talk about players who don’t belong to us. We are working hard to add more players to the squad and if we have some update to make for you the club will do.

“At the moment I will not talk about players who do not play for us. Like any club, we are trying to add more quality to reinforce our squad With Paul, Laurence and the owners, the relationship is really good.

Addressing areas to reinforce in the Chelsea squad, Pochettino added: “It’s obvious when you look at the squad and when you compare to last season too many midfielders leave the squad. We are trying hard but being respectful. It is so important to be very respectful, it is the way I love to work and the way we need to work.”

Asked about the high-octane drama of this year’s transfer window, he said: “There appears a new market like Saudi Arabia, it is good for players and coaches also. I think when this type of situation appears it is important to improve and evolve.

“It looks like a drama but it is football. We need to enjoy what we are doing but of course, when money is there and involved, it sometimes looks like a drama. The players need to play with their talent and we need to be responsible to protect the talent to create a good spectacle for the fans.”

The Chelsea boss appeared to dangle a small carrot to fans hoping their team will finalise a deal for Caicedo, stating: “We are working really hard to try and finish the squad. The market doesn’t help to finish business before the start of the season. For every club it is like this. I am positve.”

What is Tuchel saying?

Thomas Tuchel has used a Bayern Munich press conference to stress that Harry Kane remains a Tottenham player, for the timebeing.

Asked about hinderances at the airport in the Kane transfer, Tuchel was wary of speculating. “You probably know more than I do where he actually is at this time and what he’s doing,” he said. “We are working on it, that’s what I can confirm and that is no secret. But as of now there’s no decision and as long as there is no agreement the coach is not going to talk about it because it’s not his player.”

Addressing hiccups in finalising the deal for the England captain, Tuchel said: “I’m talking with the people but I had the last practice ahead of that important game [against RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup tomorrow].

“But everyone is doing what he’s here for and I’m not getting into the final hours of a transfer. I’m not going to get involved in that. [Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen] is not involved in my final practice. Everybody has their duties.”

Asked whether Bayern will play in a different style tomorrow with the potential addition of Kane, he said: “That depends on who’s on the pitch. For a couple of weeks we have been working on our build up play and the way we want to do it.

“At this time, Kane is not one of our players, so we do not have to choose a tactic according to him.”

Asked whether Kane might still play tomorrow, he added: “The most important question is, is he our player, which he isn’t at this time. My job as coach is to focus on the players we have.”

It is not just Harry Kane and Moises Caicedo who are on the move this week. Arsenal youngster Charlie Patino has also found a new club: Swansea City.

The 19-year-old has joined the Championship side on a season-long loan. It was expected earlier this summer that Patino would leave on a permanent basis, so Arsenal supporters will be pleased to know that he will indeed be returning to the club next summer.

Patino is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted youngsters to have emerged from Arsenal’s academy in recent years. He scored on his first-team debut for the club, against Sunderland in the League Cup, in December 2021.

Patino spent last season on loan at Blackpool, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions.

Romano tweeted: “Harry Kane to FC Bayern, here we go! Deal completed between all parties as Kane has given final green light.

Klopp: "I was wrong" to criticise £100m transfers

Klopp was also asked about comments he made in 2016 that suggested he would never spend this much money on a player. The German manager has acknowledged his views have changed, suggesting these types of sums are the only way in which top clubs can compete.

“Everything changes. Do I like it? No But did I realise I was wrong? Definitely. It is not great but it is the way it goes.

“It will not change around again. Saudi Arabia will not help. We as a club have to try and make sure with our resources we get the best possible team together. We really try everything to bring together the best team or squad for us.

“That is the idea and we are not in dreamland and it is not we can just point at players and bring them in. There is a lot of work to do. Sometimes one door closes and the other opens up. If people want to throw my quotes from five or six years ago, absolutely no problem. That day it was what I thought.

Now I realise I was wrong. It’s easy to admit that.

Contrary to reports much earlier this morning, Tottenham have not banned Harry Kane from flying to Germany to complete his transfer to Bayern.

The club have given their permission for him to travel to Europe today, for a medical with the Bundesliga champions.

However, our understanding is that there could still be some changes made to the deal. It seems that Daniel Levy may yet put a twist in this tale.

Klopp confirms Caicedo arrangement

So while Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool have agreed an £111m deal for Moises Caicedo, personal terms have not yet been agreed with the Brighton player.

Klopp, speaking at his morning press conference, said: “I can confirm the deal that the club has agreed, I don’t know what it means exactly, the player and agreement we will see.

“What changes is we have not endless resources, we didn’t expect a couple of things happening, Hendo, Fab and then it happened and we give it a go and the club was really stretched. We will see in the end.

“I have told you what I know. Besides that we cannot share, don’t praise the day before the night. Let’s see what happens.”

It promises to be a fascinating day as the future of the in-demand Caicedo is fought out between the two Premier League big guns.

10:01 AM BST

Kane deal likely to have add-ons

The most likely scenario with Harry Kane’s move to Bayern is that Spurs get £86 million up front (that is the headline fee in the agreement between the clubs) but with add-ons that could earn the London club much closer - possibly in excess of - £100 million.

For a 30-year-old with a year left on his contract, that seems like a high fee. Many a slip between the cup and lip though.

09:40 AM BST

The interest in Caicedo ramped up in January...

...when he was the subject of multiple bids from Arsenal (all rejected) and put an open letter on Twitter explaining why he was so keen to leave the Amex Stadium.

“I am the youngest of 10 siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador,” Caicedo wrote. “My dream always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador. I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.

“The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.”

Much changed since January – not least Arsenal dropping out of the running for Caicedo and turning their attention to Declan Rice instead. Into that gap stepped Chelsea, who have made multiple bids for the player this summer.

As recently as Sunday, Paul Barber, Brighton’s chief executive, said: “Moises had a slight hamstring injury late in training and was pulled out [of the friendly against Rayo Vallecano] for that reason. With a Premier League season just a week away it makes no sense to risk him today.

“We’re looking forward to Moises starting the season with us, he’s a Brighton player under a long-term contract.

“ He’s probably one of the most exciting young midfield players in the world at the moment and we’re delighted to have him.”

09:12 AM BST

Caicedo could undergo medical today

Brighton’s Ecuadorian midfielder could travel to Merseyside for a medical today, but the finalisation of any move is still dependent on the Ecuadorian agreeing personal terms. That appears to be the reason he has not yet signed on the bottom line, an it is well known that he wants to join Chelsea.

We reported last month that Chelsea would be prepared to allow a number of other players to join Brighton as part of a deal to sign Caicedo, possibly including England international Conor Gallagher.

When those conversations were taking place, Chelsea’s understanding was that personal terms would not be an issue with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Incidentally, Bayern Munich had also shown an interest in Caicedo earlier this summer.

09:07 AM BST

How the Kane knot began to untie

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is believed to value Kane closer to £120 million – considerably more than the £86 million that has been agreed between the clubs – but the risk of the club’s star asset departing for free in under a year has underscored negotiations with Bayern.

The key to the deal appears to be the German club having re-organised their offer so that Spurs receive a far greater amount of money up-front, with fewer add-ons and staggered payments, so they can invest in their squad immediately.

An early update from Matt Law this morning

Caicedo fee agreed with Liverpool is actually £111 million

That’s obviously a huge new British transfer record. The current record is Enzo Fernandez, who cost Chelsea £106 million in January from Benfica. Declan Rice’s £105 million transfer from West Ham to Arsenal is also somewhere close to the top of that tree.

What happened overnight

Friday looks set to be a dramatic day in the transfer market as two huge deals come to a head. (It’s also the first day of the Premier League season, but that seems like a sideshow at the moment).

Overnight it was reported that Harry Kane has agreed personal terms to join Bayern Munich. That came after yesterday’s developments, in which a deal between the clubs was apparently agreed. It is important to understand, however, that the transfer between the clubs has not yet been completed. Kane is due to fly to Germany today.

Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo, Brighton’s defensive midfielder, is the subject of a tug-of-war between Liverpool and Chelsea. All summer it has looked like the London club were front-runners for his signature, but yesterday Telegraph Sport broke the news that Liverpool had outbid Chelsea. Overnight, an agreement was reached between Liverpool and Brighton, for a fee of about £110 million, which would be a new British transfer record.

However, as with Kane, a final deal is yet to be signed and it is widely known that Caicedo wants to join Chelsea.

Stay with us this morning for the latest news from both deals, plus the rest of the goings on from the transfer market.
