What happened in 2023 TSSAA football Week 1 roundup: Triple OT wins, history-setting victories

The first Friday night of the 2023 TSSAA football season is over.

Here is a look at what happened around the Nashville area.

Alcoa 35, Ravenwood 14: Davis Dowland had 98 yards on 18 carries and scored a TD in the loss for Ravenwood.

Brentwood 38, Blackman 14: Trey Dorris ran for 140 yards and two TDs in the Bruins' win. Transfer Baylor Hayes was 12-of-23 passing for 128 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Matthew Manning had four catches for 52 yards and a TD. Teammate Clayton Merrill had four catches for 35 yards and a TD. Blackman's Caden Perkins had 20 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown and Carter Gregory was 9-of-15 passing for 75 yards in the loss.

Davidson Academy 27, Nashville Christian 20: Knox Roberts threw for 156 yards and a touchdown and Caden Stroud had 20 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown to lead Davidson Academy. Jared Curtis was 15-of-26 passing for 172 yards and a touchdown for Nashville Christian.

DCA 42, Ezell-Harding 7: Wesley Gober ran for 235 yards on 28 carries and had four TDs in the Wildcats' win. Mitchell Carey was 12-of-15 passing for 122 yards and had two TD passes. DCA racked up 363 total yards in the win.

Eagleville 14, Providence Christian 0: Brody McLemore was 10-of-12 passing for 84 yards and a touchdown and had 15 carries for 55 yards for Eagleville. Noah Lilly added 49 yards and four catches and Houston Rettig and Dawson McCrary led the defense with six tackles each.

East Nashville 45, Pope John Paul II 6: Keith Johnson scored four touchdowns for East Nashville in first-year coach Damien Harris' coaching debut. Elijah Robb had 106 yards on 30 carries and scored Pope John Paul II's lone TD.

East Robertson 42, Liberty Creek 20: Isaiah Groves had 21 carries for 210 yards and two touchdowns and caught one pass for 15 yards and a touchdown for East Robertson. Kentucky commitment Elijah Groves added 71 yards and a touchdown on sevens catches and had three carries for 18 yards.

Ensworth 40, Union City 6: Isaiah Batten was 7-of-16 passing for 120 yards with a touchdown. Teammate Sean Johnson had two catches for 70 yards. Demarii Thompson ran for 93 yards on 13 carries with a TD.

Father Ryan 50, Overton 3: Jojo Crump was 11-of-20 passing for 169 yards and four touchdowns in Father Ryan’s win. Jack Mills caught four passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns and Indiana commitment Charlie Becker had five catches for 59 yards and had two total TDs.

Grace Christian 34, Freedom Prep 6: Kyle Davidson was 10-of-14 passing for 152 yards and three touchdowns, including a 60-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Wolf. Wolf finished with six catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Woodard added 69 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Green Hill 44, Clarksville Northeast 13: Kannon Burroughs accounted for 269 total yards — throwing for 156 yards and rushing for 113. He had three passing and one rushing TD. Tight end Aaron Mattingly caught three passes for 76 yards and three TDs.

Hendersonville 47, Gallatin 33: Jackson Stroup was 18-of-31 passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns in the Green Wave's non-region loss. Teammate Jeremiah Williams had seven catches for 73 yards and two TDs and teammate Za'kyian Brinkley ran for 102 yards on 22 carries.

Hillsboro 40, McGavock 7: Deshawn Trotter was 6-of-8 passing for 112 yards and ran for two touchdowns to lead Hillsboro. Kaiki Baker added 90 yards on four catches for a touchdown and Erick Cleaves ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

Hunters Lane 20, Maplewood 0: Isaiah McGill ran for 140 yards and two TDs on 29 carries to lead the Warriors to the Week 1 win. Teammate Jason Gooden had six tackles with three for loss along with a sack.

James Lawson 18, Cheatham Co. 15: Zach Capps threw a TD pass to Mason Hawk with 5.8 seconds left to give first-year school James Lawson a win in the school's first game in school history. Cam Shields had 19 carries for 112 yards on offense and made eight tackles.

Lawrence County 14, Summertown 7: Letavion Everly scored on an 18-yard rush with 9:24 left in the game to give Lawrence County the win. Everly finished with 101 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and Ian Clayton added 96 yards on 13 carries. Ty Bryant was 2-of-7 passing for 48 yards for Summertown.

Marshall County 16, Columbia 0: Antomme Cowthorn had 14 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown and Jakavan Curry had two carries for 10 yards and a touchdown for Marshall County.

Monterey 25, Cannon County 14: Kole Bowman had two carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns to lead Monterey. Kolby Miller was 5-of-11 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard touchdown pass to Zae Odom for Cannon County.

MTCS 33, Columbia Academy 31: Gabe Howell scored the tying touchdown in the third overtime and then won it for the Cougars (1-0) with the ensuring 2-point conversion run. Eli Wilson rushed for 118 yards and two TDs and added 22 receiving yards and a touchdown for MTCS.

Mt. Juliet Christian 35, RePublic 6: Hezekiah Amick returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass for MJCA. Zach Cartwright ran for two touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries. Cole Launsby returned an interception 35 yards for a score and had a sack. Teammate Andy Griffith had five sacks and 14 total tackles.

Mt. Pleasant 29, Wayne County 6: Ryder Butler had 26 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown in Wayne County’s loss. Drew Bevis added 107 yards on 23 carries.

Nolensville 21, Rockvale 20: Zion Tamaska had 22 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns in Nolensville’s win. Ty Collins was 9-of-18 passing for 101 yards and had nine carries for 21 yards and a touchdown for the Knights. Brennan Mayhew was 14-of-30 passing for 195 yards and a touchdown for Rockvale.

Oakland 34, Independence 14: Junior Daune Morris and senior Ashton Jones combined for 287 yards rushing and four touchdowns for the Patriots (1-0). Morris had touchdown runs of 66 and 62 and QB Kyler Creasy hit Kalijah King on a 65-yard scoring strike to help Oakland race out to a 19-0 lead. Independence (0-1) had just 150 yards. Clay Davis had 61 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead the Eagles.

Page 35, Giles County 34: Page held off Giles County in overtime. William Wiebush scored on a 1-yard TD run in OT and scored the 2-point conversion for the win. Jonathan Palmer was 10-of-15 passing for 163 yards and a TD in his debut as a starter. Ethan Cunningham had 22 carries for 107 yards with a touchdown. Wiebush rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Pearl-Cohn 21, MBA 14: The Firebirds knocked off host MBA thanks in part to two Donovan Higgins TDs. Higgins had two catches for 95 yards and two TDs. Teammate Keshawn Tarleton was 11-of-16 passing for 216 yards. And JaQuis Williams returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. Brooklen Davis led the Big Red with 52 rushing yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.

Riverdale 36, Smyrna 0: Senior quarterback Braden Graham was 17 of 22 for 261 yards and five touchdowns as Riverdale (1-0) rolled both offensively and defensively (four sacks) in the win. The Warriors led 29-0 at halftime and scored on their first possession of the second half to kick in the TSSAA mercy rule running clock. Keshawn Williams had five receptions for 115 yards, including TD receptions of 39 and 32 yards. Brock Montgomery had four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Springfield 20, Greenbrier 10: Parker Betts was 10-of-16 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown and Ja’Braylon Ellis had three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown for Springfield. Nolan Carson was 5-of-15 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown for Greenbrier.

Stewarts Creek 21, Tullahoma 7: Javarian Otey scored all three touchdowns for the Red Hawks (1-0), rushing for 140 yards and two scores and adding a 90-yard touchdown reception with six seconds left before halftime that gave Stewarts Creek a 14-7 lead at the break.

Summit 40, Spring Hill 0: Mason McElhaney had 14 carries for 158 yards and a touchdown and Dominick Hollis added 125 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in Summit’s win. Jon Michael Wright was 3-of-4 passing for 59 yards for Spring Hill.

Trousdale County 9, Livingston Academy 0: Kobyn Calhoun ran for 108 yards on 19 carries and scored the game's lone TD. He also had two interceptions. Teammate Cole Gregory added 153 yards on 20 carries.

Upperman 26, Fayetteville 0: Ja’Lyric Cullom rushed for 45 yards to score Upperman’s final touchdown of the game. Cullom finished with five carries for 67 yards. Ethan Palk had 18 carries for 120 yards and Bronzden Chaffin had 16 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns for the Bees.

White House 7, Portland 6: Michael Albin had 120 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to lead the Blue Devils.

York 26, Clay County 0: Miles Leffew scored all but one of York’s touchdowns, including a 40-yard fumble recovery for a score. Leffew had 11 carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns and Logan Pannell had 12 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.
