Guardians manager Terry Francona released from hospital, all tests within 'normal ranges'
Guardians manager Terry Francona has been released from the hospital but will not manage Wednesday night's game in Kansas City, according to an update provided by the team.
Bench coach DeMarlo Hale will again take over managerial duties in Francona's absence.
Francona felt lightheaded prior to Tuesday's game and went to the University of Kansas Health Systems hospital for precautionary testing. He remained there overnight. All tests came back within their normal ranges, and he is now resting at the team hotel.
Francona is considered day-to-day to rejoin the team and has been advised to rest for a day or two.
A look at Terry Francona's recent health history
This was the first noted health situation for Francona since his 2020 and 2021 seasons as manager were cut short due to myriad of issues.
In 2020, he dealt with gastrointestinal issues and a blood-clotting situation that put him in the Intensive Care Unit. In 2021, he stepped away from the team near the trade deadline to undergo multiple needed surgeries (hip, toe) in an effort to be ready for spring training in 2022.
Francona made it through the 2022 season without any major issues. He noted in July of 2021 that part of the reason he felt he needed to step away was due to his belief that he it had reached the point where he was doing a disservice to the club by trying to grind through the pain.
Following the team's exit from the 2022 playoffs, Francona announced that he planned to return in 2023. It was also noted then, by Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff, that Francona was welcome to manage the club, and they'd effectively take it year-by-year.
