Granite Hills' Poindexter captures a third-straight title at the Desert Sky League Finals
Granite Hills’ Eric Poindexter claimed his third straight boys tennis singles title at the Desert Sky League Finals at Adelanto High School on Wednesday afternoon.
For the second straight season, Poindexter beat a Silverado player with scores of 6-1 and 6-0 in the championship round. Poindexter topped Darren Gandy, and also beat Barstow’s Ayden Gault with two bagels in the semifinals.
Gandy beat Victor Valley’s Humberto Ontiveros in the semifinals to reach the finals against Poindexter.
Silverado head coach Bill Mocharnuk was impressed with Poindexter’s dominance.
“Poindexter dominated singles action playing at a different level than the competition,” Mocharnuk said.
Poindexter’s teammates Cesar Sainz and Erick Valdovinos captured the doubles crown with scores of 6-0 and 6-4 over AAE’s Tyler Izadi and Luis Sanchez.
Sainz and Valdovinos took two of three sets in the semifinals over Silverado’s Christian Ortiz and Christopher Sauceda. Izadi and Sanchez beat Silverado’s Fredrick Hunter and Joshua Wahsington to reach the finals.
