Steve Kerr on NBA's postseason technical foul rule: It 'doesn't make a ton of sense'
Draymond Green and Kevin Durant have already picked up two technical fouls each after their opening-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Players are automatically suspended after receiving seven fouls in the postseason, per NBA rules. Losing either Green or Durant for one game would have a tremendous impact on the Warriors, especially if it happens late in the postseason.
"Well, if we go to Finals, I think Draymond and Kevin are each on pace for about 42 technicals and six suspensions, so hopefully we can withstand that," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said jokingly, via ESPN.
Kerr publicly criticized the league rule on Saturday, saying he doesn’t understand how it’s fair given that teams end up playing different amounts of games in the postseason depending on how long each series goes.
"I will never understand the rule that everybody falls under the exact same category, in terms of whether you lose in four games in the first round or you play 25 games and you go to the Finals, that it's the same technical fouls points that lead to a suspension,” Kerr said, via ESPN. “It seems strange.”
So what should the NBA do to fix it?
"I don't know. That's a good question," Kerr said, via ESPN. "Series by series or maybe every two series. Just the way it is now doesn't make a ton of sense. I'd like to see it revisited, but that's coming from a guy whose team gets a lot of technical fouls and plays deep in the playoffs. So I'm a little biased."
Durant was actually called for three technical fouls in their series with the Clippers, though one in Game 3 was later rescinded by the league. Kerr said he’s hopeful that Green’s second technical foul, which he picked up in Game 6, will be rescinded too.
Either way, Kerr said he trusts both players to control themselves if they get closer to the limit later on in the postseason.
"But I do know that Kevin and Draymond have a good feel for when they reach that number,” Kerr said, via ESPN. “They generally are able to shut that off, shut that emotion off and stay on the floor. That's going to be important."
