Eleven local teams erupted for 42 goals Thursday in advancing to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section girls soccer playoffs.

The only local team to play a scoreless tie was the one which — by format — couldn’t advance Thursday.

Host Oaks Christian held top-seeded Santa Margarita Catholic to a scoreless tie in the first leg of their Open Division quarterfinal matchup at Thorson Stadium.

Oaks Christian goalkeeper Hannah Wieler kept the Lions’ 18th shutout of the season in front of a defense led by junior Isa Wieder and senior Abigail Seawright.

That sets up a decisive second leg of the home-and-home series Saturday afternoon in Rancho Santa Margarita.

“It was a good match,” said Oaks Christian coach Sebastian Alvarado said. “They’re good. I thought the girls played well. It went back and forth a couple times.”

The CIF-SS introduced the Open Division this season with a new “Champions League-style” format, similar to European play in the men’s and women’s professional game.

Alvarado was hopeful of making the trip to south Orange County on Saturday with a lead, but that didn’t materialize as chances were difficult to come by against the defending Division 1 section and regional champions.

“The strategy was to try to get some goals today,” Alvarado said. “It just makes it an 80-minute game (Saturday). We have some film and we need to work on some things.”

Santa Margarita had most of the ball, but Oaks Christian may have had the best chance of the night in the 36th minute.

Winger Avery Oder was taken out from behind as she raced in along on the Santa Margarita goal. The referee waved away Oaks Christian’s claims for an obvious penalty kick.

“When you get to this level and you’re playing against the best, every team is good,” Alvarado said. “Every game is a CIF final.”

Division 1

Moorpark 4, Redondo Union 1: Linnea Peltonen had two goals and Rebecca Hernandez and Gianna Foss also found the net as the Musketeers dominated a matchup of recent section and regional champions.

Moorpark is the defending Division 3 sectional and regional champion. Redondo Union won Division 2 sectional and regional titles in 2022.

Peltonen scored twice as Moorpark built a 3-1 halftime lead. The Musketeers have netted four or more times in four straight matches.

“They did a good job,” Moorpark coach Mike Alexander said.

Moorpark (10-5-1) will visit Westlake (12-2-4) on Saturday in a massive all-county second-round match.

Westlake won an early season meeting 4-0 on Dec. 8, but both teams were missing key players.

Westlake 2 Flintridge Prep 1 (OT): KK Chowena scored a golden goal late in overtime from Ava Bowers’ assist as the Warriors advanced to the second round for the fourth straight season.

Layla Simon opened the scoring in the third minute for Westlake, which will host Moorpark Saturday.

Division 2

Camarillo 2, Upland 1: Aaniyah Frye scored twice as the host Scorpions came from behind to win their first playoff game in five years.

Upland took the lead in the 12th minute, when Delaney Dugan headed in a corner kick. A diving save from Camarillo goalkeeper Jessica Heybl kept it from doubling its lead in the first half.

Frye tied the score in the 46th minute with a tight-angle finish from Aleiyah Schexnayder’s pass and put Camarillo ahead to stay in the 62nd minute.

“I don’t think it was our best game, but they found a way to win,” Camarillo coach Bryan Monka said. “We have some pretty talented attacking players. … They did a really good job. They kept pounding away at them.”

Camarillo (10-4-1) carry an eight-match winning streak into Saturday’s second-round visit from Irvine-Woodbridge.

Buena 7, Long Beach Wilson 2: Junior Kayalily Penn had a second-half hat trick and four other Bulldogs found the net as Buena answered conceding first in the postseason with a six-goal explosion.

“It looked like everyone had a really good showing,” Buena coach AJ Tewes said. “It kind of opened up in the second half.”

Freshman Lexi Kimble answered Wilson’s opener in the 16th minute and Tatianna Padilla gave Buena a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute.

Amalia Nolan and Natalia Donnelly joined Penn on the scoresheet in the second half as Buena reached the second round for the fourth time in five seasons.

Buena has scored three or more goals nine times in its current 10-match winning streak.

“The girls have definitely been on a roll,” Tewes said. “They’ve hit a little bit of stride. But we all know that things can happen differently in the playoffs.”

Buena (16-3-1) will host La Habra in Saturday’s second round.

Division 3

Oak Park 3, Pasadena-Marshall Fundamental 0: Malea Johnson had two goals in the first half and Sydney Robertson added an insurance goal as the Eagles advanced to the second round for the first time in nine years.

Ava Dermott and Gwen Gove had assists and goalkeeper Ainsley Gove kept her second straight postseason shutout for Oak Park (11-6-2), which will host Palm Springs in Saturday’s second round. Kickoff is 3 p.m.

Santa Paula 6, Marlborough 2: Yaraby Herrera and Anaya Davis both scored two goals and Melanie Torres and Berenice Hernandez also scored as the Cardinals reached the second round for the second straight season.

Santa Paula (15-4-2) will visit Palm Desert in Saturday’s second round.

Chaminade 3, Oxnard 1: The Yellowjackets end their season at 10-7-2.

Division 4

Thousand Oaks 4, Foothill Tech 1: Freshman Maddie Linville scored twice and senior Ivy Williams and freshman Luchiana Shattuck also had goals as the Lancers advanced at Ventura College.

Thousand Oaks (11-2-4) will visit Irvine-Katella in Saturday’s second round.

Fillmore 3, Rialto 1: Marlene Gonzalez finished with a goal and two assists and Liz Mendez had a goal and an assist as the visiting Flashes won a playoff match for the third straight season.

Athena Sanchez also found the net for Fillmore (12-3), which host Walnut in Saturday’s second round.

Arcadia 2, Rio Mesa 0: The Spartans (11-7-6) fell on the road at the top seed.

Huntington Beach-Ocean View 3, Thacher 0: The Toads’ season ends at 8-4-1.

Division 5

Channel Islands 2, Geffen Academy 1: After going four decades without a postseason victory, the Raiders are in the second round for the second straight season.

Nelly Rivera and Ruby Martinez scored the goals as Channel Islands won on the road at UCLA.

“All credit to the girls who continue to show great work ethic and dedication every training session,” said Channel Islands coach Jose Salvador Orozco.

Channel Islands (9-7) will host San Marino in Saturday’s second round.

Sierra Vista 1, Hueneme 0: The Vikings’ season ends at 8-8.

Division 6

Grace Brethren 8, Trinity Classical Academy 0: Priya Torresh finished with four goals and an assist, Taylor Ikenounye scored two goals, and Addison Cho had a goal and an assist as the Lancers charged through their first-round matchup at home.
