Girls lacrosse: Who's your choice for Journal News/lohud Player of the Week?

The high school girls lacrosse season is entering the home stretch for most teams with public and private school playoffs launching.

But even with many teams having played about 16 games, fans' enthusiasm doesn't seem to be waning.

Last week, Journal News/lohud readers cast 23,673 votes for the Girls Lacrosse Player of the Week.

With coaches having nominated eight athletes for the award, Edgemont's Isa Mello emerged on top.

The junior, who, over the course of just three games, scored 28 goals, had 10 assists and won the race to secure 21 balls off the draw, received 11,136 votes.

Clarkstown South's Karlie Maye was runner-up with 4,921 votes.

Last week's poll: Who do you think is the Player of the Week?

Della Goodman, Rye

The senior attacker, who recently surpassed 100 goals for her varsity career, had two goals and an assist, won the race to secure two ground balls and forced two turnovers in the Garnets' 18-7 win last week over Mamaroneck. She also had a hat trick and an assist, got one ball off the draw and caused a turnover in Rye's 14-7 win over Hen Hud.

Makaela Larkin, Nanuet

The senior midfielder, who'll play next year for Susquehanna University, recorded the 100th point of her varsity career last week. She scored three times in a 10-7 win over Rye Neck, and also scored in a 14-4 loss to Section 1 Class D top-seed Albertus Magnus.

Elle Mason, Rye Country Day

The freshman midfielder, who's known for her strong drives, defensive knockdowns and speed to secure loose balls, scored six goals, registered an assist and was strong defensively as the Wildcats ended their regular season with a record of 11-1 with a 14-11 win over Greenwich Country Day and a 19-9 win over Millbrook.

Maddie Merriman, North Salem

The senior netminder, who'll play for the University of Rochester next year, amassed 29 saves over three games last week, allowing 7.33 goals per game with a 57% save average -- a very high number in girls lacrosse. She had 10 saves in a win over Pawling and nine in a loss to Mahopac . Merriman also stopped 10 shots in a double-overtime loss to Carmel in which she had several outstanding stops late in regulation to force the OT. All told, Merriman has now surpossed 350 saves for her varsity career.

Brooke Peters, Carmel

The junior attacker, who also sometimes plays defense, scored right before the period-ending horn in double overtime to lift the Rams to a 7-6 win over North Salem. Earlier in the week, she also scored and had three assists in Carmel's 11-4 win over Brewster.
