Girls lacrosse regional semifinals: John Jay-CR wins, Yorktown falls by a goal in B game

And then there were three.

Section 1 came within a hair Wednesday night of qualifying all four of its girls lacrosse class champions for state regional finals before Class B winner Yorktown came up just short in its game vs. Section 2 champion Bethlehem Central, falling 7-6.

The loss means only Section 1 Class A Suffern, Class C John Jay-Cross River and Class D Bronxville will play the Section 9 champions Saturday at James O'Neill High School in Highland Falls, hoping to qualify for next week's state semifinals at SUNY-Cortland.

John Jay-CR, The Journal News/lohud's top overall ranked local squad, defeated Section 2's Queensbury 10-7 Wednesday at Schuylerville High School before the Yorktown setback.

Wolves win 17th game of season

Queensbury wasn't an unfamiliar to John Jay-CR.

More like unforgettable, to many on the team.

Queensbury ended John Jay-CR's season last year in a state regional final, coming back from a five-goal deficit to beat it 18-13.

Like Wednesday's game, last year the Wolves led by a goal at the half.

Unlike last year's game, there would be no Queensbury comeback.

Molly Gallagher had a big game in net with 11 saves. Annie Brennan (who had three goals in last year's game) and Mia Puccio both had hat tricks and Shannon Nolan had a six-point game with two goals and four assists as the Wolves, who led 5-4 at the half, improved to 17-2 on the season.

Jojo Degl and Kayla Shapiro also scored.

Brennan, Puccio and Degl each had an assist for the Wolves, who secured 11 of 19 balls off the draw.

Kendra Ballard scored four times for the Spartans and Kaitlyn Barton, Kady Duffy and Meredith Montgomery had solo tallies.

Lilly Trowbridge, Barton, Duffy and Montgomery each had an assist.

Bayley Duffy had four saves for Queensbury, which finished the season 15-3.

The Wolves' game against Goshen is schedule for noon Saturday at O'Neill.

Goshen edged Saugerties 14-13 for the Section 9 Class C crown.

Husker comeback falls just short

Yorktown, which upset Horace Greeley for the Section 1 Class B crown, trailed Bethlehem Central 5-1 at the half before coming back to nearly tie the score.

Maeve Conway, Sophie Klein and Kait Tietjen each scored twice for Bethlehem and Brianna Fabian had a solo tally.

Caroline Marotta got a team-high six balls off the draw.

Yorktown scored the game's final three goals but couldn't come up with the needed seventh to tie due to a combination of good Bethlehem defense and Bethlehem's ability to play keep-away and kill the clock when it had the ball late.

Alex Scialdone and Ava Cunneen both hit the back of the net twice for the Huskers and Brienna Gaccino and Reileigh McEnroe also scored.

McEnroe forced two Bethlehem turnovers and she also beat Bethlehem to four ground balls, as did Cunneen.

The Huskers finished the season 14-6.
