Gil Pound: Pound for A third letter

Oct. 10—Longtime readers will remember that my wife and I had our daughter Norah right around two years ago. When she was born, I started the tradition of writing a letter to her each year around her birthday. I would like to continue that this week as she turns 2 Saturday.

Dear Norah,

This past year has been one of major change for you. Easily the biggest among the changes is your mobility. First steps came around 14 months. From 15 months onward, you were really moving. Your legs now look like they've been through the wringer as you still have your fair share of falls, but those falls rarely make you cry. That's the kind of toughness dad likes to see.

Your personality is the best. Always smiling, always laughing, and you make others do the same everywhere you go.

You're talking up a storm. School, walk, run, play, church, friends, and "ish" — which is what you say when you want Goldfish crackers — are among the most used words in your vocabulary. We've even got you saying please and thank you. We need to work on yes and no sir/ma'am, especially before Poppy sees you again because he's sure to be on you about that. You've corrected a lot of your formerly mispronounced words. Shoe used to be "oosh." Elmo was once "Melmo." It makes us proud as parents, but is also a little heartbreaking as you grow up right before our eyes. For now, at least we still have "cools" (school).

Goldfish are riding the top of the snack chart for now, but thankfully you're not picky like your dad. It's especially impressive watching you scarf down a whole loaf of bread at LongHorn. Not sure where you put it. You're such a little thing.

Our living room television is on a steady rotation of Norah-centered programming. YouTube star Ms. Rachel was the No. 1 choice for a long time — and I mean a long time — but I think Blippi ("puppy" in your terminology) and Meekah ("Beekah") have overtaken her as you grow more comfortable with the moving camera angles. Sesame Street, your second birthday party theme, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse are other frequent flyers. The TV can, however, turn into a point of contention when the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs are playing. Dad's cell phone usually comes in handy when UGA has a day game.

Speaking of the Dawgs, they have absolutely spoiled you rotten. Two titles in a row and going for a third as the current No. 1 team in the country. You've seen them lose just once in your lifetime, and even that was avenged. After years of heartache and close calls, you came along to serve as dad's little good luck charm.

Lucky is also how I feel about having the privilege to be your dad, and your mom feels the same way. We are so thankful that God blessed us with you as our child. We have so much fun together as a family, and you've enriched our lives beyond measure. This adventure in parenthood has been well worth the challenge, and I can't wait to see where it takes us. Norah, thank you for being the best.

Love,

Dad
