Has New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall played his last down in the National Football League?
Marshall had season ending surgery on his injured ankle Tuesday. He was injured during the Week 5 27-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Marshall was attempting to make a catch down the left sideline and came down on his ankle awkwardly.
Marshall had two receptions for 15 yards before exiting the game. He had 18 receptions for 154 yards this season.
Marshall is in his 12th season. He is a five-time Pro Bowl receiver who also played for the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, and New York Jets.
He signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Giants. The deal made perfect sense when it was announced. Marshall is second to the Arizona Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald among active players in career receiving yards with 12,215 and third to Fitzgerald and the Dallas Cowboys’ Jason Witten among active players in career receptions with 959.
Marshall’s early Giants tenure was marred by a shoulder injury. Once healthy, he was unable to develop timing and rhythm with quarterback Eli Manning. Marshall also had issues with dropped passes this season, including a key one in the Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions.
The following week, Marshall had an underwhelming performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was clearly frustrated with his play.
“Just not playing well right now,” Marshall said. “I haven’t played a solid game since I’ve been here.”
His reception and receiving yards totals will be the lowest of his career. This will always be the first season of Marshall’s career without a touchdown.
