Giants were middle of the pack in motion rate during 2022 season
Many NFL analysts judge the potency of offenses by the frequency of pre- and at-the-snap motion used by their play callers.
ESPN Stats Info released a chart of each team’s pre-snap motion percentage for this past season. The New York Giants are right in the middle at No. 19 with a 14.1% snap motion rate and a 38% motion rate overall.
I think relevant in light of those Chiefs Super Bowl touchdowns: motion at the snap and overall motion rates for every team this year, postseason included.

The Kansas City Chiefs utilized two at-the-snap motion calls to score twice against Philadelphia in the red zone in last week’s Super Bowl.
A lot had to do with the circumstances. First, Patrick Mahomes was under center for the Chiefs and second, the Eagles’ defense was overaggressive and bit on both fakes leaving the receivers wide open for scores.
Yes, it’s great to have a lot of pre-snap motion in your offense but it’s not mandatory for success as demonstrated by the Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals, who are at the bottom of the chart.
Still, the Giants did promise a lot more motion in 2022 and demonstrated that during training camp. But when the games began to count and injuries mounted, they fell off that pace considerably.
