Giants trade lefty Long to A's for cash considerations

Giants trade lefty Long to A's for cash considerations originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants and Oakland Athletics made just one trade over a span of nearly three decades, and the pace didn't pick up much when Farhan Zaidi moved back to the Bay Area.

With the A's possibly moving to Las Vegas, perhaps the front offices have finally decided to compensate for the lost time.

A few days after the Giants acquired outfielder Cal Stevenson from the A's for cash considerations, they sent pitcher Sam Long the other way while receiving cash.

The two minor moves essentially amount to a swap of Stevenson for Long, as the Giants DFA'd the left-handed pitcher on Wednesday to clear a 40-man spot for Stevenson, who has joined their Triple-A roster.

The move should be good for Long, a Fair Oaks native who went to Sacramento State. He made 40 appearances over two years for the Giants after breaking through in camp in 2021, but he bounced between starting and relieving and never found a consistent role at the big league level.

Long fell behind Sean Hjelle, Tristan Beck and other young Giants on the depth chart this spring. He now joins the worst team in the big leagues, but he should have an opportunity for more playing time.

Zaidi has made four minor trades with his former team since taking over as president of baseball operations in San Francisco. All have been cash deals. The Giants traded Burch Smith to Oakland in 2020 and sent Skye Bolt across the bridge last season.
