Giants’ Tommy DeVito, Jersey’s own, is now toast of the town

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito made his first career start at MetLife Stadium on Sunday and did so in front of a packed house. Among the 82,211 fans were roughly 200 members of his family and friends.

Although it was a cold and rainy day in East Rutherford, the results were as desired. DeVito protected the ball well and the Giants ultimately picked up a 10-7 victory over the New England Patriots.

The celebration was on, how you doing.

“It feels great. Any game after a win is awesome, but to be able to do it here at home for my first time is surreal. I’m going to enjoy the moment,” DeVito told reporters after the game. “The last time I started here was in high school, my state championship.”

DeVito’s latest win comes after he spent the week handing out turkeys for Thanksgiving — something he took great pride in given that it’s his hometown. To give back meant the world to him and his family.

It’s been a whirlwind for DeVito and it’s not going to slow down now. All around Jersey and into New York City, the undrafted rookie is the toast of the town. Delis are naming sandwiches after him, pizzerias are naming pizzas after him and everyone is doing “the DeVito.”

“I’m not really an attention seeker, but more eyes are going to be on you, so it’s going to be more criticism always, like always, but I’m just going to continue to go out, do what I do, try to lead the team to score points and win football games,” DeVito said.

There will be no escaping the attention for DeVito. Like head coach Brian Daboll last year, DeVito is Bono at the moment. Or Tony Soprano. Whichever you prefer.
