New York Giants offensive tackle Michael Bowie was charged with domestic violence and battery and two counts of malicious injury or destruction of property stemming from an incident earlier this summer in Oklahoma.

An arrest warrant was issued for Bowie’s arrest on Friday with a bond of $17,000.

Tulsa County assistant district attorney Kenneth Elmore said the incident between Bowie and his girlfriend occurred over finances. The exchange turned physical when the girlfriend said something about Bowie’s mother.

Elmore said in an interview with the Tulsa World that Bowie grabbed his girlfriend by the neck and threw her to the ground. He proceeded to break two televisions and punched a hole in the wall.

Bowie was a seventh-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2013. He was on the Seahawks team that defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. After being waived by the Seahawks in 2014, he was claimed by the Cleveland Browns. Bowie was released by the Browns last season.

He signed a futures contract with the Giants in January.

This is the second consecutive summer the Giants had to deal with a domestic violence issue.

Former kicker Josh Brown was suspended one game for a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy in relation to a domestic violence arrest. He was later released by the Giants after admitting he abused his wife.

The Giants issued a statement on Saturday.

“We were made aware of the Michael Bowie situation Saturday afternoon. We immediately notified NFL security. Michael will not make the trip for our game (Monday night) in Cleveland as we gather more information on the issue.”

The NFL suspended Dallas Cowboys running Ezekiel Elliott for six games for violation of the league’s personal conduct policy although he was never charged criminally. Bowie could face potential discipline by the league as well.

Bowie is considered a long-shot to make the team. He has been working with the third team throughout training camp.
