Gastonia, Shelby area top performers during spring break baseball and softball tournaments

Here is a daily list of the top performers from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties during the sixth week of spring sports action.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled courtesy of information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Saturday, April 6

Baseball

Evan Matile, East Lincoln: Was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three total runs scored in a 7-4 win over Washington Township (New Jersey)..

Matthew Phuntek, East Lincoln: Was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Dylan Scott, East Lincoln: Was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Softball

Sara Rose Warlick, Crest: Had her team’s only hit in a 5-0 loss to West Wilkes.

Friday, April 5

Baseball

Ty Davis, East Lincoln: Pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in a 9-2 win over Eastern (Louisville, Kentucky).

Evan Matile, East Lincoln: Hit a two-run homer and scored another run.

Matthew Phuntek, East Lincoln: Was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Trey Spees, East Lincoln: Was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and four total runs scored.

Kellen Karr, North Lincoln: Pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking four in an 11-0 win over Loris (South Carolina). He also had a hit and an RBI.

Blake Mincey, North Lincoln: Had a hit, RBI and scored a run.

Tucker Sigmon, North Lincoln: Had a hit, three RBIs and scored a run.

Jack Wuerdeman, North Lincoln: Had a double, RBI and scored a run.

Thursday, April 4

Baseball

Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament

Stephen Richardson, Bessemer City: Had a triple and three RBIs in a 12-4 loss to Christ the King.

Dro Suarez, Bessemer City: Had a double and scored a run.

Logan Teno, East Gaston: Was 2-for-3 in a 5-0 loss to North Gaston in the Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament final.

Tripp Dow, Forestview: Pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13 Highland Tech batters in a 2-0 win.

Owen Kelly, Forestview: Had a hit and an RBI.

Carter Robinson, Forestview: Had a hit and an RBI.

Caleb Cloninger, North Gaston: Pitched a complete game, allowing no runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over East Gaston to claim the Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament title.

Houston Rector, North Gaston: Was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Cooper Collier, Stuart Cramer: Had a hit and an RBI.

Ty Detweiler, Stuart Cramer: Had a hit, two RBIs and scored a run.

Dylan Jennings, Stuart Cramer: Had a double, RBI and scored a run. He also pitched three innings, striking out four Ashbrook batters as part of a combined no-hitter with Ridge Nixon and Andrew Walker.

Chris Wurster, Stuart Cramer: Had a hit and an RBI.

Shelby Easter Baseball Tournament

Gabe Holiday, Burns: Wound up 2-for-3 in a 5-4 win over Kings Mountain in the tourney final. Down a run in the seventh, the Bulldogs rallied for two runs to claim the tournament title.

Hagan Hoyle, Burns: Had a hit, RBI and scored a run.

Marshall McGowan, Burns: Finished 2-for-4.

Nick Williams, Burns: Was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Josh Taylor, Burns: Had the game-winning RBI on a base hit in the seventh. He also scored a run earlier in the game.

Jackson Toney, Burns: Pitched six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts.

Eli Black, Crest: Had a hit, RBI and scored a run in a 13-4 win over Shelby.

Camden Cobb, Crest: Was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. He also struck out six in 4 ⅓ innings, allowing no runs on two hits.

Brett Ledbetter, Crest: Had a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Landry Ohmstead, Crest: Had a double and three RBIs.

Tucker Cash, Kings Mountain: Had a hit and an RBI in a 5-4 loss to Burns.

Lawson Kennedy, Kings Mountain: Had a hit and two RBIs.

Brayden Patrick, Kings Mountain: Was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.

Aidan Taylor, Kings Mountain: Was 2-for-4.

Easton Davidson, Shelby: Was 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 13-4 loss to Crest.

Brett Morgan, Shelby: Was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Wednesday, April 3

Baseball

Shelby Easter Baseball Tournament

Eli Cooke, Burns: Was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 14-2 win over Piedmont.

Hagan Hoyle, Burns: Pitched four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.

Marshall McGowan, Burns: Was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jackson Toney, Burns: Was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Eli Black, Crest: Had a hit and an RBI in the Chargers’ 10-1 loss to Clover (South Carolina).

Zach Rayfield, Crest: Was 2-for-3.

Colton Mayes, Kings Mountain: Was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in a 2-1 win over Chase.

Brayden Patrick, Kings Mountain: Was 2-for-3.

Aidan Taylor, Kings Mountain: Pitched a complete game, allowing a run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Talan Winfield, Shelby: Was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the Golden Lions’ 11-1 loss to South Caldwell.

Tuesday, April 2

Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament

Johann Antonio, Ashbrook: Had a hit, RBI and scored a run in a 6-5 win over Forestview.

Jaidyn Muazzin, Ashbrook: Had a hit and scored a run.

Evan Valentine, Ashbrook: Had a hit, RBI and scored a run.

Paxton York, Ashbrook: Was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Parker Stafford, East Gaston: Helped combine for a no-hitter with Jackson Messer in the Warriors’ 5-0 win over Bessemer City. He pitched six innings, striking out 10 and walking one.

Houston Summey, East Gaston: Was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Isaac Aycock, Forestview: Was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in his team’s 6-5 loss to Ashbrook. He also pitched 6 ⅓ innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with 11 strikeouts.

Alexander Nance, Forestview: Was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Carter Robinson, Forestview: Was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Liam Fulbright, Highland Tech: Was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in a 14-4 loss to Stuart Cramer.

Caleb Bates, North Gaston: Was 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 4-1 win over Christ the King..

Chase Ghantt, North Gaston: Pitched a complete game, allowing a run on four hits with 13 strikeouts. He also had an RBI double.

Houston Rector, North Gaston: Had a double and scored a run.

Hunter Dye, Stuart Cramer: Was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 14-4 win over Highland Tech.

Jack Scholz, Stuart Cramer: Was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Shelby Easter Tournament

Hagan Hoyle, Burns: His double scored two runs, propelling the Bulldogs to a 4-3 win over Clover (South Carolina). Burns scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Marshall McGowan, Burns: Was 2-for-3 with a double.

Colby Putnam, Burns: Was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Josh Taylor, Burns: Pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.

Asher Smith, Crest: Was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored in a 6-4 loss to Piedmont.

Talon Dalton, Cherryville: Was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-3 win over Churchville-Chili. (New York)

Elliott Dellinger, North Lincoln: Was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.in an 11-4 win over Rush-Henrietta (New York).

Chad Matthews, North Lincoln: Was 4-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Cason McGinnis, North Lincoln: Was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Logan Sammons, North Lincoln: Was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored.

Patrick Blee, South Point: Was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 13-12 win over Laney..

Landon King, South Point: Was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Zeke Pruitt, South Point: Led the Red Raiders by going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a run scored.

Laila Davis, Cherryville: Was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a 9-3 win over East Bladen.

Landyn McBride, Cherryville: Was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Alexis McSwain, Cherryville: Was 2-for-2 with a double, four RBis and two runs scored.

Ava Miller, Cherryville: Was 2-for-4 with double and an RBi.

Emma Proctor, Cherryville: Was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Maddie Huffman, Kings Mountain: Had a double, RBI and scored a run, in addition to striking out 10 in a 4-3 win over West Lincoln.

Kayla McSwain, Kings Mountain: Was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 4-3 win over West Lincoln.

Ella Gibson, South Point: Was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a 15-5 loss to West Lincoln.

Payton Hood, West Lincoln: Was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in a 15-5 win over South Point.

Gaston County Easter baseball tournament

Anthony McClain, Ashbrook: Was 2-for-3 in a 9-0 loss to East Gaston.
