GameCenter final: Penn State 6, UND 4

Oct. 31—NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Penn State's Clayton Phillips and Connor MacEachern each scored two goals to give the Nittany Lions a 6-4 win in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Bridgestone Arena.

The Nittany Lions took a two-goal lead in the first period.

UND cut it to a single goal four times, but never managed to tie it.

UND's goals were scored by Judd Caulfield, Ethan Frisch, Jake Schmaltz and Riese Gaber.

First period

Penn State 1, UND 0 — Tyler Gratton (Danny Dzhaniyev). UND forward Ashton Calder has a look on a rush, but misses the net wide. The puck carroms around the boards and starts a three-on-one the other way. Tyler Kleven is the lone guy back for UND and does his best to break it up, but Dzhaniyev's pass gets over to Gratton, who buries it.

Penn State 2, UND 0 — Clayton Phillips (Kevin Wall, Ben Copeland) 12:48 (pp). Penn State gets a five-on-three power play for a full two minutes. UND nearly kills it off, but the Nittany Lions convert. UND blocks a point shot, but it deflects to a wide open Phillips backdoor. He buries it for a two-goal Penn State lead.

Penn State 2, UND 1 — Judd Caulfield (Riese Gaber, Jake Schmaltz) 18:10 (pp). UND gets one back on its third power-play chance of the period. Gaber toe drags the puck and shoots to get it on net. Penn State goalie Oskar Autio makes the save, but Caulfield is there to bury the rebound.

Second period

Penn State 3, UND 1 — Connor MacEachern 5:32 (pp). MacEachern gets the puck in the right circle and snaps a shot that beats UND goalie Zach Driscoll high to the blocker side. The puck may have been re-directed off of UND defenseman Tyler Kleven's stick.

Penn State 3, UND 2 — Ethan Frisch (Matteo Costantini, Louis Jamernik) 7:37 (pp). UND gets another goal on the power play, this time with the second unit. There's a scrum for the puck in the corner. Jamernik gets it to Costantini, who makes a great pass to a wide-open Frisch. The Moorhead High product took one step and picked the corner above Autio's glove.

Penn State 4, UND 2 — Clayton Phillips 15:47. Penn State turns a bunch of zone time into a goal when Phillips gets the puck at the top of the zone and snaps it through a screen for his second goal of the game.

Penn State 4, UND 3 — Jake Schmaltz (Riese Gaber) 19:49 (pp). UND scores on the power play for the third time of the night. A puck gets to the slot area, where Gaber sends it back to Schmaltz. The UND rookie, at the top of the hash marks, fires one through traffic to make it a one-goal game.

Third period

Penn State 5, UND 3 — Connor MacEachern (Jimmy Dowd Jr., Simon Mack) 12:52. Penn State once again answers UND and pads its lead on the rush. MacEachern flies up the right wing, and just as Sanderson gets possession, the Fighting Hawks defender loses his footing and MacEachern has a clear opening to shoot. He fires it past Driscoll for his second goal of the night.

Penn State 5, UND 4 — Riese Gaber 17:59 (ex). UND pulls goalie Zach Driscoll and has a bunch of chances. It finally scores when Gaber rips a wrist shot from the top of the circles to the corner of the net.
