Game One Recap: Texas A&M vs Ole Miss

In the battle of the “bottom of the barrel” Texas A&M (16-10) knocked off Ole Miss (15-10) in game one of the series. It was an entertaining game with scores in seven of the nine innings and some solid pitching from the Aggies. Ole Miss took a one-run lead into the rain delay and that stoppage was just what the doctor ordered because the Aggies would rally to complete the comeback win.

To the much chagrin of Aggie fans, Ole Miss got an early double and followed that up with a home run for a very early 2-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the same inning, it was more of the same as previous games, Jack Moss was the only batter to produce a hit in the top of the lineup. He would never make his way across the plate as the next two batters could not get a hit to bring him in.

Brett Minnich was back in the lineup for his second game and finally got his first it and it was a 450′ bomb into right-center field. After a double by Ryan Targac a Jordan Thompson single into center field scored Targac. A double play ended the inning but not before Texas A&M tied the game.

The fourth inning saw the Ole Miss and Texas A&M’s Trevor Werner exchange home runs to tie the game again going into the fifth inning. The Aggies lost the lead for the third time in the top of the sixth and after a decent outing, Nathan Dettmer was pulled for Evan Aschenbeck who struck out the last three batters.

Before the bottom of the seventh could start the ground needed a drink and after an hour-plus rain delay break, the Aggies came back on the field refreshed. Thompson started it off with a bunt and a throwing error advanced him to second base. Another throwing error moved Thompson to third and Hunter Haas to second. Professional hitter, Moss, was intentionally walked loading the bases and two batters later Freshman standout Jace LaViolette hit a grand slam for A&M’s first lead of the game 7-4.

In the bottom of the eighth Blue Bell Park got to fill the stadium with bubbles again on a second Minnich solo home run to center field to push the lead to 8-4. Will Johnston needed three outs to get Texas A&M their second SEC win on the season. It started off shaky by giving up a single and a wild pitch putting a runner on second base. Then with two outs, an Ole Miss home run cut the lead by two. Johnston had enough of that mess and struck out the last batter to end the game for a final score of 8-6.
