FRIDAY PREP ROUNDUP: Hatchets open Central SETember Fest with two wins; Newton football earns first win of the year

Sep. 24—CHAMPAIGN — The Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets opened up the Champaign (Central) SETember Fest Tournament with a straight-set victory over Champaign (Centennial) and a three-set win over Rock Bridge out of Columbia, Missouri.

In the first match, Windsor (12-3) won 25-10, 25-18.

Ella Kinkelaar had three kills, 24 assists and nine digs. Gabby Vonderheide had one ace and two kills. Halle Moomaw had three aces, 10 kills and one block. Kinley Quast had three aces, four assists and 10 digs. Samantha Hayes had three kills. Ainslie Eident had one ace and two digs. Ellie Wittenberg had two kills and one dig. Alaira Friese had three kills and one dig. Anna Albert had three digs. Brinlie Durbin had two kills and one block. Mya Friese had four kills and one dig and Zaida Wascher had two digs.

In the second match, the Hatchets (13-3) lost the first set 18-25, won the second 25-23 and won the third 15-9.

Kinkelaar had two kills, 30 assists, 13 digs and four blocks. Vonderheide had eight kills and 11 digs. Moomaw had 14 kills, two digs and eight blocks. Quast had one ace, one assist and 16 digs. Hayes had two kills, one dig and four blocks. Eident had one ace and four digs. Wittenberg had two kills and two blocks. Alaira Friese had one kill and one dig. Albert had one ace and three digs and Mya Friese had three kills and two digs.

FOOTBALL

Newton 28, Olney (Richland County) 20

The Newton Eagles ended its losing skid with a 28-20 win over Olney (Richland County) on Friday.

Newton rushed for 212 yards on 37 carries. Meyer Tarr had 19 carries for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Drake Wolf had 10 for 59. Cole Phillips had two for 18. Max Meinhart had four for 16 and Payton Harris had one for two.

Meinhart completed 6-of-13 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown to one interception.

Evan Zumbahlen caught one pass for 93 yards and the score. Phillips had one catch for 13 yards. Harris had two for 13. Harris had one for 10 and Wolf had one for three.

Defensively, the Eagles had 82 tackles, two interceptions and six tackles for loss.

Landen McClure had 12 tackles, one for loss. Cole Elmore had 11 tackles, two for loss. Wolf had nine. Gus Bierman had nine, one for loss. Phillips had seven. Tarr had six. Evan Baltzell had six, one for loss. Zumbahlen had five and one interception. Isaac Rake had five. Dexter Fulton had three. Drew Earnest had one for loss. Harris had one and one interception and Logan Ochs, Kohlten Bartheleme, Landen Blake, Mitchell Spiker and Owen Schackmann had one.

Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 14, Toledo (Cumberland) 6

The Cumberland Pirates fell to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond on Friday, 14-6.

Cumberland falls to 3-2 and 3-2 in the Lincoln Prairie Conference with the loss.

BASEBALL

Teutopolis 4, Effingham (St. Anthony) 3

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes defeated the St. Anthony Bulldogs on Friday, 4-3.

Garrett Gaddis went 3-for-4 with one double and one run. Davin Worman went 1-for-3 with one run. Mitch Koester went 1-for-4 with one double and two RBIs. Henry Thompson went 1-for-3. Brett Kreke went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Zac Niebrugge went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Carter Hoene, Alex Kremer and Gavin Addis pitched for Teutopolis (16-3). Hoene allowed five hits, three runs and one walk over four innings; Kremer allowed two hits and one walk over two innings and Addis allowed one hit and one strikeout over one inning.

As for St. Anthony (18-1), Aiden Lauritzen went 3-for-4 with one double and two runs. Brock Fearday went 2-for-3 with one home run, one run, two RBIs and one walk. Connor Roepke went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Brady Hatton went 1-for-3 and Max Koenig went 1-for-4.

Sam Link, Brock Fearday and Lauritzen pitched for the Bulldogs. Link allowed five hits, four runs and two walks to one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings; Fearday allowed two hits and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings and Lauritzen allowed one hit in one inning.

Louisville (North Clay) 8, Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor 0

The North Clay Cardinals defeated the Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets on Friday, 8-0.

Ian Jones went 2-for-4 with one double and one run. Jack Compton went 1-for-3 with one run, one RBI and one walk. Cayden Craig went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run and two RBIs. Trenton Ingram went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ayden Jones went 2-for-3 with one run. Keegan Sullens went 1-for-3 with one run and one walk and Jesse Weidner went 1-for-2 with one double, one run, one RBI and one walk.

Cody Zimdars and Ian Jones pitched for North Clay (12-8). Zimdars allowed one hit and three walks to three strikeouts over five innings and Ian Jones allowed one walk to one strikeout in two innings.

As for Stewardson-Strasburg (7-8), Jackson Gurgel went 1-for-3 with one double.

Aiden Sayers and Carter Verdeyen pitched for the Hatchets. Sayers allowed five hits, three runs and three walks in three innings; Verdeyen allowed six hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks to two strikeouts in three innings.

Farina (South Central) 6, Neoga 5

The South Central Cougars defeated the Neoga Indians on Friday, 6-5.

Brody Markley went 2-for-2 with one double, three runs, one RBI and one walk. Zane Montes went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Trevan Sidwell went 1-for-4. Colton Smith went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Colby Bursott went 1-for-3. Callaway Smith went 1-for-2 with one walk and Max Magnus went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Smith and Montes pitched for South Central (12-7). Smith allowed two hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks to three strikeouts over two innings; Montes allowed three hits, two runs and one walk to six strikeouts in five innings.

As for Neoga (3-13), Keaton Lacy went 1-for-3 with two runs. Landon Titus went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs. Colin Blazich went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Trey Sheehan went 1-for-3 and Carter Young went 1-for-3.

James Ballinger and Micah Staszak pitched for the Indians. Ballinger allowed nine hits, five runs and three walks to four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings; Staszak allowed one hit, one run and one walk to two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

GIRLS GOLF

Effingham, Teutopolis at University of Illinois Golf Course

The Effingham Flaming Hearts and Teutopolis Lady Shoes competed at the University of Illinois Golf Course on Friday.

Effingham finished third with a final round of 376; Teutopolis was seventh at 397.

For the Flaming Hearts, Elena Niebrugge shot a final round of 92. Grace Harper shot a 93. Natalie Armstrong shot a 94. Ella Tuman shot a 97 and Makenna Mayhood and Mya Harvey each shot a 98.

For the Lady Shoes, Halle Bushue shot an 85. Brileigh Bloemer shot a 93. Olivia Wermert shot a 108. Brooke Thoele shot a 111. Sophia Martin shot a 114 and Hildi Niemerg shot a 119.

BOYS GOLF

Centralia Orphan Invitational

St. Anthony won the Centralia Orphan Invitational at Greenview Golf Course on Friday.

The Bulldogs shot a team score of 207 in the best-ball format.

Preston Phillips and Joey Trupiano combined to shoot 32 on the front-nine and 36 on the back for a final round of 68. Lane Ludwig and Charlie Wegman combined to shoot 34 and 35 for a 69 and Dakota Flaig and Ryan Schmidt combined to shoot 35 and 35 for a 70.
