Frankfort's Frericks & Sisseton's Johnson win team roping; Clear Lake's Moore tops in bareback
Chase Frericks of Frankfort and Tyan Johnson of Sisseton took top honors in team roping and Devon Moore of Clear Lake did the same in bareback riding over the weekend in the Watertown East Region High School Rodeo at Derby Downs.
Any cowgirls or cowboys who earned three points combined in an event at the Huron and Watertown East Region rodeos advances to the the State High School Finals Rodeo that is slated for Tuesday through Sunday at the Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre.
Frericks and Johnson collected 19 points in team roping at Watertown, winning the second go (9.27 seconds) on Sunday after placing second in the first go on Saturday. Sidney Johnson of Sisseton and Keylee Zancanella of Aurora won the first go with a time of 7.55.
Some rodeo events were held on Friday. Full rodeos were held Saturday and Sunday.
Moore also collected 19 points in bareback riding, taking second in the first go and winning the second go (61 score). Grady Hemmingson of Bradley won the first go with a score of 49.
Morgan Theisen of Clear Lake won the second go of barrel racing with a time of 16.139 seconds.
Registration for the state finals opens at 1 p.m. on Tuesday with cutting and reined cow horse events slated for 4 p.m. Second go-rounds for cutting and reined cow horse are scheduled for Wednesday starting at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., along with rodeo queen competition throughout the day.
Rodeo performances are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday with the final rodeo performance set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. The finals rodeo concludes with awards and breakfast for all state award winners starting at 8;30 a.m. at the Fort Pierre Youth Center.
