Four Winds-Minnewaukan, Carrington advance in Division A Region 2
Feb. 19—MAYVILLE, N.D. — Four Winds-Minnewaukan outscored Grafton 16-2 in the second quarter en route to a 53-33 win over Grafton on Monday in the North Dakota Division A Region 2 girls basketball tournament.
Division A is the middle division of North Dakota's new three-class basketball system.
Four Winds' Suri Gourd, a 5-foot-8 eighth-grader, scored a game-high 17 points on 7-for-20 shooting.
Ava Gourd was also in double figures with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Grafton was led by Summer Moberg's 13 points and six rebounds.
The Spoilers struggled shooting, hitting just 3-for-21 from the field in the first half and 1-for-6 from 3-point range for the game.
Four Winds-Minnewaukan advances to the region semifinals to take on No. 1 and unbeaten Thompson at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Thompson has faced Four Winds twice this season, with the Tommies winning by 13 in Thompson early in the season and winning by 28 on the road later in the year.
Carrington 59, Hillsboro-Central Valley 39: Carrington jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and never trailed on its way to a win over Hillsboro-Central Valley in the first round of the Division A Region 2 tournament.
Four Cardinals scored nine or more points, led by Isabel Wendel with 10. Kacie Rexin, Edyn Hoornaert and Kenadie Pazdernik each ended with nine points.
The Burros were led by 10 points each from Paige Cotton, Megan Ensign and Brynley Lessard.
Carrington forced the Burros into 26 turnovers to just 10 for Carrington. Wendel finished with five steals, while Hoornaert added four.
The Burros shot better from 3-point range than inside the arc. HCV was 6-for-13 from long distance as Cotton and Ensign each connected on two 3-pointers.
But HCV was 13-for-34 from the field. The Burros' percentage was actually better than Carrington but the Cardinals took 21 more shots than the Burros thanks to the turnover battle.
Carrington advances to face No. 2 Devils Lake in the region semifinals. The game will start 20 minutes after the end of the previous semifinal.
Devils Lake swept Carrington during the regular season, winning both matchups by eight points.
