Former Mets first-round pick Kumar Rocker to undergo Tommy John surgery

Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker (80) pitches against Arizona in the NCAA Men's College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Omaha, Neb.

In a young career that has been a roller coaster of high upside and injury history, Kumar Rocker will now miss significant time as he will undergo Tommy John next week, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

After a stellar collegiate career at Vanderbilt, the Mets selected Rocker with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Rocker, now in the Texas Rangers system, did not sign with New York after injury concerns surrounding his throwing arm.

Rocker pitched last season in the Frontier League before the Rangers selected him with the third pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.

In his six starts this season with High-A Hickory, Rocker pitched to a 2-2 record and a 3.86 ERA across 28 innings of work, walking just six batters while striking out 42.
