Former Bears TE Jimmy Graham detained in Los Angeles after suffering medical incident

New Orleans Saints and former Chicago Bears tight end Jimmy Graham was arrested Friday night in Los Angeles, according to TMZ Sports, that was caused by a medical incident.

Police were called after Graham was seen acting erratically near a resort and upon arriving at the scene, the tight end resisted arrest. Graham was charged for suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, resisting, delaying, and obstructing a police officer. He has since been released. Graham and the Saints are in Southern California preparing to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in a preseason game.

Not long after the initial report surfaced, the New Orleans Saints released a statement regarding Graham’s behavior, indicating the incident was caused by a medical episode:

New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham experienced a medical episode last evening, which resulted in him becoming disoriented. He was taken into custody by local authorities and transported to a local hospital for evaluation for what Dr. John Amoss believes to be a likely seizure and spent the night under medical supervision and testing. Amoss met Graham at the hospital and is overseeing his care at this time. He was released this morning and is with the team as they continue preparations for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Graham re-signed with the Saints this offseason after not playing during the 2022 season. He spent 2020 and 2021 with the Bears when he signed a two-year deal worth $16 million. Graham caught 64 passes for 623 yards and 11 touchdowns during his two years in Chicago. The 36-year old began his career in New Orleans in 2010, spending five seasons with the Saints before he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. Graham also spent time with the Green Bay Packers.
